Composed of 13 forwards, eight defencemen, and two goaltenders, the group will practice in Abbotsford this Thursday and Friday at 10:30 am PT. They will then travel to Washington to face off against the Seattle Kraken prospect team on Saturday at 6 pm PT and on Sunday at 4 pm PT.
Included as part of the young team are some very enticing names in the Vancouver pipeline, including top prospects Tom Willander and Jonathan Lekkerimäki.
Drafted 11th overall by the Canucks in 2023, Willander signed his three-year entry-level contract in May after a drawn-out negotiation. Now, the Boston University alum is focused on making his debut in the pros this season. Ranked number one in Canucksarmy’s Summer 2025 prospect rankings, he’ll be the blueliner to watch at the showcase.
Fellow Swede Lekkerimäki made his North American debut this year, splitting his time between Vancouver and Abbotsford. In 36 games played in the AHL, he had 19 goals and 28 points, adding three goals and six points in 24 appearances with Vancouver. In Abbotsford’s Calder Cup-winning campaign, the attacker contributed three goals and four points.
At 21 years old, the 2022 first-rounder has room to grow, but has already shown what he can do when he finds his game at the highest level. If all goes according to plan this year, he may not be considered a prospect much longer.
Vancouver’s top two picks at this year’s entry draft, centreman Braeden Cootes and goaltender Aleksei Medledev, will make their showcase debut this week.
In his first year as captain of the WHL’s Seattle Thunderbirds, Cootes had 26 goals and 63 points in 60 games and will look to build off that work this year. Meanwhile, 17-year-old Medledev is now the number one guy for the Memorial Cup-winning London Knights. Splitting his starts in his rookie season, he had 22 wins in 34 games with a 2.79 goals against average and .912 save percentage, with three shutouts. He’s a ways away from the big leagues, but he’s definitely one of the most exciting goaltending prospects the organization has seen in years.
Beyond some of the flashiest names, there’s a whole roster of young players who will show off what they can do this week, many looking for a roster spot in the pros this season.
