Fresh off his team’s 17th loss in their past 19 games, Vancouver Canucks forward Teddy Blueger spoke candidly about his team’s struggles.
In conversation with Sportsnet’s Iain MacIntyre following the Canucks’ 5-2 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday night, Blueger didn’t mince words.
“We’re not playing for nothing,” Blueger told MacIntyre. “You’ve got to have some respect and appreciation to be in this league, some respect for your teammates to play hard every night regardless of the standings. The whole idea of, like, tanking and building for the future. . . when you play meaningless games like this, no one’s learning anything… You’ve got to dig in, try to compete and win every game. And we can’t get deflated and just stop playing when things aren’t going our way. I think we’ve got to find some character in our group. I know we have some good guys that want to win and know how to win and to compete and play hard, but I think we’ve got to find it as a team. Just find, you know, probably some more respect for each other, some appreciation to be in this league (and) not take that for granted, not just go through the motions because we’re last in the league. You know, come in and compete.“I mean, I’m kind of sick of talking about it. You know, we probably don’t have enough character as a group to dig in in those moments, and we just kind of get deflated too easily. No one can change that except for us. So we’ve got to take some more responsibility, more accountability. . . for each other, you know, just play hard for each other. We’re not really doing that consistently enough. And when we go against a team that knows how to win, it’s even more difficult.”
For those keeping track at home, Blueger used the word “character” twice in those quotes. It’s been a disastrous season for the Canucks, who entered the campaign with hopes of winning enough to convince Quinn Hughes to stick around. Instead, their captain asked out, leading to the Canucks dealing Hughes to the Minnesota Wild. Since trading Hughes, the Canucks have a 7-16-3 record, and as mentioned, have lost 17 of their last 19 games.
Blueger has missed most of the season with an injury he suffered two games into the season. Since returning on January 21st, Blueger has tallied four goals and three assists, adding two assists in the Canucks’ loss to Vegas. A pending UFA, the expectation is that the Canucks will try to sell high on Blueger and move him out ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline.
Even with that knowledge, Blueger is continuing to play hard and attempt to hold both himself and his teammates accountable. And really, that’s quite admirable from a player who could very easily go through the motions when outside expectations are low for the team. Blueger now joins four other Canucks who will represent their countries at the Winter Olympics, with Blueger preparing to suit up for Team Latvia.
