Report: Tyler Myers the only Canucks free agent willing to take a pay cut

On Wednesday’s edition of Donnie and Dhali – The Team, Rick Dhaliwal reported that Tyler Myers is the only upcoming Vancouver Canucks free agent willing to take a pay cut. According to Dhaliwal, Myers stands out among his peers who believe their contributions to the Canucks’ best season in 11 years merit a raise. The news comes on the heels of Dhaliwal’s report that Ian Cole will hit free agency on July 1st.
“All these UFAs felt they played a big role in the Vancouver Canucks having their best season in 11 years,” Dhaliwal said. “The only guy willing to take a pay cut is Myers. He’s going to go from six to around three. Everybody else has got their hand out for a raise.”
This past season was Myers’ best in his five campaigns with Vancouver, despite averaging a career-low ice time of 18:57. His performance was marked by an increase in assists, the highest since the 2017-18 season, and his most combined points since 2018-19. Additionally, Myers achieved the best plus-minus rating of his 15-season NHL career.
Myers’ reduced minutes this season saw him playing with more commitment and consistency, producing more points and hits while reducing indecision, turnovers, and penalties. This rejuvenation was crucial to the Canucks’ success.
During his end-of-season press conference, Myers expressed his desire to remain with the Canucks. “Yeah, I would love to,” Myers said. “What we’ve been able to build here the last year and a half, I think it’s really special to be a part of. It’s an unbelievable city, the fans were quite amazing in the playoffs. It was something special stepping out for every game, and I would love to be back.”
Drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the first round, 12th overall, in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Myers won the Calder Memorial Trophy at the end of the 2009-10 season as the NHL’s best rookie. His career includes stints with the Buffalo Sabres and Winnipeg Jets before joining the Canucks in the 2019-20 season. Over his career, Myers has accumulated 93 goals, 278 assists, and a plus-minus of +9 in 995 games.
