The injury-riddled Vancouver Canucks will be without their captain tonight against the Carolina Hurricanes.
After missing Thursday’s practice in Carolina, Quinn Hughes was back on the ice for morning skate at the Lenovo Center. Unfortunately for the Canucks, he did not join his teammates for pregame skate.
Hughes was injured on Tuesday against the Winnipeg Jets when his stick got tied up with Mark Scheifele going back for the puck in the defensive zone. The Canuck captain was given a hooking penalty on the play, but went to the locker room instead of the penalty box. He was able to return after a few missed shifts. Hughes managed to finish the game, logging his first three-point night of the season.
Victor Mancini was activated from injured reserve earlier in the day, but it was left-shot defenceman Joseph who slots in for Hughes. He will skate on a line pairing with rookie Tom Willander.
Other lineup notes: Arshdeep Bains comes out of the lineup for MacKenzie MacEachern.
Bains played all 18 games for the Canucks this season. After a strong start that saw him pick up a pair of assists in the first three games, Bains has just one assist and a minus-three rating in his following 15 games.
MacEachern was called up on October 29 and has been with the team since. He has appeared in three games this season, picking up an assist against the Minnesota Wild, finishing with a plus-two rating despite dropping the contest 5-2. MacEachern picked up the primary assist on Max Sasson’s breakaway goal in tonight’s game against the Hurricanes.
Hughes joins the list of Thatcher Demko, Filip Chytil, Nils Höglander, Teddy Blueger, and Derek Forbort, currently out of the lineup due to injury. The Orlando, Florida native’s next opportunity to draw back into the Canucks lineup is on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
