The Vancouver Canucks have announced that goaltender Thatcher Demko has been placed on injured reserve (IR) retroactive to November 11th, and have activated defenceman Victor Mancini from IR.
Demko sustained a lower-body injury in the first period of Tuesday’s 5-3 loss to the Winnipeg Jets, but he played the entirety of the frame before not returning for the second period. It’s likely that Demko sustained the injury during a cross-crease save on Cole Perfetti during the opening period.
The specifics of Demko’s injury still haven’t been confirmed by the Canucks, but it was reported by insider Frank Seravalli earlier this week that he was only expected to miss 2-3 weeks. With his IR placement, he will miss the next three games, although his overall timeline suggests he will likely miss five to 10 games.
The injury came in the first period of Demko’s return against the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday. He missed the Canucks’ back-to-back games last weekend as part of maintenance to limit his starts amid a condensed schedule due to the Olympic break. The team was adamant that it wasn’t injury-related. Seravalli’s report also mentioned that this injury isn’t related to those maintenance days or to the knee injury that kept Demko out for much of last season.
When healthy, Demko has had a solid season for the Canucks. In 10 games, he has a 5-4-0 record, a .903 save percentage (SV%) and a 7.49 5v5 goals saved above expected, which ranks sixth among all goalies this season.
The Canucks also announced that Mancini has been activated from IR. While he was activated ahead of Friday night’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes, he will now draw into the lineup. Demko and Mancini’s injuries are among the many that the Canucks are dealing with right now. In addition to those two, Teddy Blueger, Filip Chytil, and Nils Höglander are injured up front, while Derek Forbort and Quinn Hughes are also dealing with injuries on their back end.
The Canucks will look to bounce back from back-to-back losses when they visit the Hurricanes on Friday at 4 p.m. PST. Vancouver currently sits in seventh in the Pacific Division with an 8-9-1 record.
