April Fools’ Day is perhaps not as fun an occasion for fans of the Vancouver Canucks as it is for most other franchises.
Being a Canuck fan can feel like a bad joke at times, and the 2025-26 season was a particularly sharp example of the painful comedy. The 2025-26 season was a little like being caught in the middle of a Rob Schneider routine – everything has fallen apart, no one is enjoying themselves, and the only laughs are ones of pity and uncomfortability.
At the same time, however, being a Canuck fan almost demands a certain sense of humour. If you’re still here, you’ve obviously got some ability to roll with the punches and take more than a few of them on the chin. And maybe, after all that 2025-26ness, you need a good laugh. Or, more appropriately for the times, perhaps a nervous chuckle instead.
Below, we’ve crafted some (fictional) headlines that may sound like bad April Fools’ jokes in the making, but that are also not so removed from reality as to be entirely off the table. Laugh at these now, but at the same time, dread their ever coming true…

Toronto Maple Leafs agree to purchase “oxygen chamber” from Canucks…

Let’s start with something truly light-hearted. News broke yesterday that the Toronto Maple Leafs had heavy interest in former Vancouver GM Mike Gillis for their newly vacated GM position. Were such a hiring to occur, there’d be an almost-instantaneous war of words between the franchises. But maybe also an opportunity for some interconference commerce.
One of the anecdotes about Gillis’ time with the Canucks was his famous oxygen recovery chamber, which he brought in to help the Canucks recuperate their bloodstreams after hard-fought skates. We haven’t heard about that chamber in a while, but it’s presumably still collecting dust somewhere in the archives.
Maybe it’s the first veteran Canuck to be shipped out this summer.

The Toronto Maple Leafs hire Manny Malhotra (again)…

Okay, right into the bad feels now. There was definitely some hurt to be had the last time the Maple Leafs stole Malhotra away from the Canucks. The year was 2020, and the extra sting came from the fact that Malhotra left Vancouver for a lateral move – going from assistant coach to assistant coach.
Well, it could very well happen again. Malhotra is the heir apparent to the Canucks’ coaching job, but the longer they wait to move on from Adam Foote and make it official, the more likely it is that Malhotra starts to get offers from other NHL teams. The Leafs are almost certainly going to fire coach Craig Berube as soon as their season ends. This outcome sounds frighteningly possible.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have won the 2026 Draft Lottery…

We debated back and forth about which “other team wins draft lottery” headline would be the best example of a dark comedy, and although we’re already a little heavy on Toronto content today, it has to be them. The Oilers look like they’re heading to the playoffs, and none of the other teams have quite the same awful mouth-feel as “with the first overall selection in the 2026 Entry Draft, the Toronto Maple Leafs are proud to select.”
You can tell that Vancouver fans are steeling themselves for a Draft Lottery loss already. But a loss to the Maple Leafs, specifically, would be a devastating blow.

Canucks’ practice facility sets opening day of October 1, 2032…

The Canucks are reportedly finally starting the process of creating a practice facility. But with said process only in its very initial stages, and with how long any good construction project can take on the Lower Mainland, who knows when it would actually be completed?
In terms of the most humorous outcomes, we think it’s that the Canucks announce an opening date for the facility, but that it’s so far into the future that it extends beyond all current player contracts. That’s 2032, and with enough delays and budget changes, a five- to six-year build is entirely plausible…

Canucks trade Minnesota first in exchange for…

Get ready for this possibility. “The Canucks trade Minnesota first in exchange for a later first, a second, and…” Okay, that one might be fine. But once we get into the territory of “The Canucks trade Minnesota first in exchange for 24-year-old…”, then we’re starting to get into the nightmare fuel.
Do not forget that Jim Rutherford hinted that the pick could be used to acquire a player further along in their development path, way back when the Quinn Hughes trade was made. Maybe that’s changed, given everything that’s happened since, but don’t be surprised if and when the pick heads out the door and someone like Barrett Hayton comes back in the return.

Vancouver re-signs Evander Kane to a two-year extension, with an AAV of…

Any version of his headline is sure to set fire to the fanbase and…the Canucks haven’t really given any indication that it won’t happen yet. Fans could absolutely swallow a Teddy Blueger extension. But a Kane extension would probably cause a genuine revolt, which makes it a revolting development, to be sure.
Until it officially doesn’t happen, it could still happen.

Vancouver trades Elias Pettersson (D) in exchange for…

Okay, we’re getting a little bit out there now, but this is still entirely possible. Say, first, that the Canucks are unable or unwilling to trade the senior Elias Pettersson this summer. And then say that the younger Elias Pettersson, who had a bit of a step-back year in 2025-26, continues to step back. Say he maybe gets leapfrogged by someone like Kirill Kudryavtsev at camp. Well, under that scenario, it’s easy enough to imagine that Canucks trading the younger Elias Pettersson ahead of the older one.
And, really, just for a moment, imagine the feeling of reading that headline, your initial reaction to it, and then the horrible realization that comes a few seconds after that. This would be among the stranger things to happen in franchise history, and that’s saying a lot.

CanucksArmy announces that September is Hughes Month…

It is his birthday month, after all.
Alright, we’re mostly just teasing our intrepid leader David Quadrelli on this one. But with enough fan demand, we can make it happen.

Canucks announce ticket price hikes after worst NHL home record in 30 years…

Oops, too late on this one.
The Canucks’ 8-25-5 home record (as of this writing) in 2025-26 is the worst in the NHL over the past 30 years.
The price hikes have already been announced via a letter to season ticket holders.
Sometimes, the cruellest jokes in life are the ones that hit a little too close to home. (Pun intended.)
