Welcome back to NHL Notebook — the series here at CanucksArmy where we deliver you news and notes from around the National Hockey League — oftentimes through a Vancouver Canucks-tinted lens!
Just mere hours before the Toronto Maple Leafs were set to get their revenge on a dirty hit from Anaheim Ducks captain Radko Gudas on captain Auston Matthews, the Maple Leafs made headlines for a move they made off the ice.
Toronto Maple Leafs fire GM Brad Treliving
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman broke the news that the Maple Leafs had relieved General Manager Brad Treliving of his duties.
And shortly after, the Maple Leafs confirmed Friedman’s reporting in an official statement release that reads:
Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment announced Monday the organization’s decision to part ways with Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving.“Throughout the course of this season, there has been deep analysis into both the current state of the Maple Leafs organization and the direction needed to achieve the ultimate goal of delivering a Stanley Cup championship to the city,” said MLSE President and CEO Keith Pelley.Brad Treliving is a man that we all have deep respect and appreciation for, both as a hockey executive and as a person, but it was determined that the club must chart a new course under different leadership. The organization is grateful for all that Brad has contributed in his nearly three years with the Maple Leafs and we wish him and his family the very best.”Brad Treliving was named General Manager of the Maple Leafs in May, 2023 and the club has compiled a 139-92-27 record, which includes a playoff record of 10-10 with a first round series win over the Ottawa Senators, during that span.
As mentioned in the Maple Leafs’ statement, Treliving has been Toronto’s General Manager for the past three seasons and has very little success to show for it. After what has been an impressive nine-year playoff run, the 2025-26 Maple Leafs are bound to miss the playoffs for the first time since the 2015-16 season. At the time of this writing, the Maple Leafs have a 31-30-13 record (75 points), are 14th in the Eastern Conference and 24th in the NHL standings.
Under Treliving, the Maple Leafs made 18 player trades. Here is the full list:

The biggest blemishes on his record as the GM of the Maple Leafs are the Carlo trade and the Marner departure.
To acquire Carlo, Treliving had to pay the hefty price of Fraser Minten, who has been playing an impressive middle-six role for the Bruins this season, as well as a first-round pick in 2026. Luckily for the Leafs, considering how the season has gone, this pick is top-five protected. However, if the Leafs’ pick ends up in the top five, it becomes an unprotected first-round pick in 2027 for the Bruins. This bumps the 2027 first-round pick traded to the Flyers in exchange for Scott Laughton to an unprotected 2028 first-round pick.
This could pose a major hindrance if the Maple Leafs decide to rebuild and miss out on these top picks over the next two seasons.
While it was good work to still acquire an asset in Nic Roy from the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for a player who was going to sign there in free agency anyway, Marner’s departure from the Maple Leafs has left a massive hole in their lineup, which has led to this catastrophic downfall in 2025-26.
All eyes appear to be on current St. Louis Blues GM Doug Armstrong, who is stepping down to allow Alex Steen to take over, as a potential candidate to fill the new role of the GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
