Trade talks look to be heating up around Evander Kane this week, and now we have some insight on what the Vancouver Canucks may be looking for in return.
According to NHL Network’s David Pagnotta, the Canucks are reportedly willing to retain salary and are looking for a prospect and/or a draft pick in return. He also notes that teams in the Eastern Conference are interested in Kane.
Vancouver currently holds just under $2 million in cap space, and Kane is on the final year of his contract with a cap hit of $5.125 million. The Canucks can retain up to 50% of Kane’s salary, meaning a trade would free at least $2.5 million in cap space, depending on how much they retain.
On Monday, Donnie and Dhali – the Team’s Rick Dhaliwal reported that Kane’s agent, Dan Milstein, was “given permission to help facilitate a trade for his client.” Kane’s contract carries a modified 16-team no-trade clause.
Last week, NHL Network’s Kevin Weekes reported that the Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche are among the likely destinations for Kane in a trade. Though according to Pagnotta, some teams in the East are calling about him now as well.
Kane was acquired by the Canucks last June from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick. So far this season, the 34-year-old Vancouver native has just nine goals and 15 assists for 24 points in 51 games with the Canucks, averaging 16:53 TOI per night. Averaging less than 0.5 points per game, it’s his worst point-per-game pace since his rookie year. With the Canucks currently rebuilding their roster amid a disastrous season, Kane is a veteran piece who could bring back younger assets or draft capital.
During the Olympic break, the NHL will have a roster freeze that runs from February 4th to the 22nd, during which no trades can be made. After that, the NHL trade deadline comes on March 6th. It remains to be seen if the Canucks will try to get Kane moved sooner or closer to the deadline.
