On Monday, the NHL announced its 3 Stars of the Week. Along with Dallas Stars forward Jason Robertson and Detroit Red Wings scoring threat Alex DeBrincat, Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes was named the third star after an exceptional couple of games.
Hughes started the week by assisting on all three of the Canucks’ goals last Tuesday against the Winnipeg Jets. However, an injury suffered in the 5-3 loss kept the 26-year-old out of the lineup last Friday night, when the Carolina Hurricanes pulled out a 4-3 overtime win. Hughes returned to the lineup on Sunday afternoon against the Tampa Bay Lightning and delivered the best performance of the young season. He notched four assists in a 6-2 victory, helping snap the Canucks’ three-game losing skid.
Thanks to his first four-point performance in over two years, and fourth of his career, the Orlando, Florida native led all skaters in the NHL in helpers last week with seven.
Despite missing five games so far, Hughes has still been one of Vancouver’s most efficient offensive weapons. In 15 games, he has scored a goal and 16 assists for 17 points. He sits tied for 10th among all skaters in apples and fourth among defencemen. His 17 points have him tied for the team lead with Elias Pettersson, along with sitting tied with Dallas Stars rearguard Miro Heiskanen for fourth in scoring among blueliners.
Hughes has been one of the most effective players over the past few years, not only with the Canucks, but the entire league. He has reached 76 points in each of the past three seasons, including setting career highs in goals (17), assists (75), points (92) and plus/minus (+38) during the 2023-24 campaign. Along with helping the Canucks win the Pacific Division, Hughes also won the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s best defender.
The Canucks (9-9-2) are set to visit the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers on Monday night.
