KELOWNA, BC – The Everett Silvertips made easy work of the Chicoutimi Saguenéens in the Memorial Cup semifinal. The game was close for the first period, but once the Silvertips got rolling, they were just too much for the Saguenéens to handle, and it all started with Landon DuPont. Coming into the night with a game-time decision, DuPont had his best game of the tournament, potting a pair of goals to lift his Silvertips to a 6-1 victory and a date with the Kitchener Rangers in Sunday’s Memorial Cup final.
Kelowna fans in Prospera Place were treated to some highlight-reel goals in the first period. Jaxsin Vaughan got it all started with a snipe into the top right corner after Tomas Lavoie missed the puck to clear the zone.
Lavoie would redeem himself later in the period, when he deked around a pair of Silvertips, took the puck through the slot to below the faceoff dot and sniped a shot over Anders Miller’s shoulder. Not only did Lavoie beat the Silvertips netminder, but also the referee, who called it no goal on the play. The play would continue for a few seconds before the horn went off.
It had been a bit of a quiet tournament for DuPont, but he put his stamp on this game less than two minutes after Lavoie’s goal, when he took a pass from Carter Bear in the high slot. He winds up and releases a wicked shot into the top left corner to regain the Silvertips’ lead. DuPont put enough zip on that to lose his balance on the shot.
The scoreline would remain 2-1 for the rest of the first period and through the first five minutes of the second period. But then the tides started turning for the Silvertips. After a Grade-A chance for the Saguenéens in the slot that was sent wide by Peteris Bulans, Carter Bear fired a shot bardown on a breakaway to bring the Silvertips’ lead to two.
And from there, the floodgates opened for Everett. Zackary Schantz sent one five-hole on Lucas Beckman.
Then, DuPont scored his second of the game with a blistering one-timer from the right faceoff dot.
And Julius Miettinen finally found the back of the net less than a minute into the third period.

Standouts

Landon DuPont
In the two games he’s played so far this tournament, there were a few flashy moments of his brilliance, but it wasn’t overly impressive considering the enormous reputation he carries. That all changed tonight with his wicked shot on his two goals. Whatever injury he was ailing from that kept him out of Wednesday’s action was a complete non-factor tonight. The way he moved around the offensive zone with his elite edge work to create open space for himself and find his teammates was on full display tonight.
Peteris Bulans
Hard to find a standout for the Saguenéens in such a lopsided loss; however, Bulans had a few quality looks in this one. While he wasn’t able to convert on any of his chances, Bulans did an admirable job of filling in for Jordan Tourigny.

Canucks/Draft takeaways

Paging Captain Obvious, but Landon DuPont is special. The Canucks need to be bad again next year to guarantee themselves the best chance possible to land(on) this guy. He proved he was worth another year of torture if they can walk away with him next June.

Memorial Cup final

With the result, the Everett Silvertips will face Vancouver Canucks prospect Gabe Chiarot and the Kitchener Rangers in the Memorial Cup final on Sunday at 6 PM local time.
