KELOWNA, BC – Night two of the 2026 Memorial Cup begins tonight, where noted Vancouver Canucks fan Landon DuPont and the WHL Champion Everett Silvertips will take on the QMJHL Champion Chicoutimi Saguenéens. This will be the lone game of the Round Robin stage that will not feature a Canucks prospect.
The Everett Silvertips finished the regular season as the CHL’s top team, with a 57-8-2-1 record and 117 points. Their 117 points were nine more than the top OHL team (Brantford Bulldogs) and 13 more than the Moncton Wildcats – 14 more than their opponent, the Chicoutimi Saguenéens.
Like the Kitchener Rangers, the Silvertips hardly faced any adversity throughout their postseason run. They swept the Portland Winterhawks in Round 1, made light work of the Kelowna Rockets in Round 2 (4-1), swept the Penticton Vees in the Conference Finals, and, after losing Game 1 of the WHL Finals, won the next four to advance to the Memorial Cup.
The Chicoutimi Saguenéens finished the regular season second in the QMJHL, just one point behind the Wildcats, with a 49-10-3-2 record. The Saguenéens walked into the QMJHL Conference Finals with back-to-back sweeps of the Halifax Mooseheads and Quebec Ramparts. They faced some trouble against the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in Round 3, dropping Games 1 and 4. Still, they found a way to rally together a string of wins in Games 5 and 6 to advance to the QMJHL Final.
It only seemed fitting that Chictouimi would meet up against Moncton in the Finals, as they were the two best teams in the regular season. The Saguenéens found themselves in a similar situation as the Conference Finals, tied 2-2 after four games. But as they did against the Huskies, they rallied back-to-back wins to book their ticket to Kelowna.
The Silvertips definitely have the firepower. They had four players who surpassed 20 points through their 18 postseason games: Julius Miettinen (27), Matias Vanhanen (24), Landon DuPont (23), and Carter Bear (22). But don’t sleep on the Saguenéens roster. They had three 20-point scorers in their 20 playoff games: Maxim Masse (24), Mavrick Lachance (23), and Nathan Lecompte (20).
NHL Draft-prospect-wise, the Silvertips have one first-round pick (Carter Bear), and four other drafted players (Julius Miettinen, Shea Busch, Luke Vlooswyk, and Tarin Smith). And, of course, the projected first-overall pick in 2027, Landon DuPont. The Saguenéens have their fair share of NHL talent. They had eight NHL-drafted players: Maxim Masse, Maxim Schäfer, Emmanuel Vermette, Émile Guité, Tomas Lavoie, Alex Huang, Alexis Bernier, and Lucas Beckman. Along with those players, they have five more who weren’t drafted but are in other NHL teams’ systems: Thomas Desruisseaux, Nathan Lecompte, Mavrick Lechance, Jordan Tourigny, and Peteris Bularis.
While the Saguenéens are well represented with NHL talent, the QMJHL is considered a little watered down compared to the other two CHL leagues. But the Silvertips were the best team in the CHL this season, so it might be a high hill to climb for this Saguenéens team.
