While the Vancouver Canucks may not have made the playoffs this year, there has still been plenty of entertaining postseason hockey for British Columbians to enjoy, as the Abbotsford Canucks have fought their way to the Calder Cup Final through a thrilling run.
And if you haven’t caught any of the games so far, now is your chance. On Wednesday, the AHL announced that Game 1 of the championship series will be available to stream for free via FloHockey’s Youtube. It will also be streamed via FloHockey’s Facebook and X accounts. The best-of-7 series is set to kick off this Friday, June 13th, at 4pm PST.
Unfortunately, after Game 1 fans will have to pay regular prices for the service to access the rest of the games, with a monthly fee of $39.99, or an annual fee of $203.88 (which includes access to all AHL, ECHL, and college hockey).
Abbotsford is set to square off against the Charlotte Checkers, the AHL affiliate of the Florida Panthers, who are facing off in the Stanley Cup Final this week. Abbotsford finished the season with a 44-24-4 record for a total of 92 points, good for second in the Western Conference and their best finish in franchise history. It’s also already their best playoff result since the team formed in 2021, as Abbotsford had previously never even won more than one game in the first round.
The Checkers meanwhile are making their second appearance in the Calder Cup Finals, after first winning the minor league championship in 2019. They finished with a 44-22-6 record for 94 points, placing third in the Eastern Conference. Located in North Carolina, the franchise is the sixth farthest away from their NHL counterpart, who play out of Sunrise, Florida.
Abbotsford are set for a tough matchup in the group from Charlotte, who swept their last two series en route to the Finals. Look out for the goaltending battle between Checkers netminder Kaapo Kahkonen, who holds a .927 SV% across 12 games played, and Arturs Silovs, who has a .929 SV% through all 18 of Abbotsford’s playoff matches.
This will be the first time the two franchises ever meet on the ice, setting up what is sure to be an exciting and unpredictable final, with a chance to bring at least some hardware Vancouver’s way this spring.
