The Vancouver Canucks have narrowed their search for their next general manager down to five.
Whoever that new general manager is will have their hands full with a lot of decisions on Day 1 of the job. One of the top priorities will be what to do with the scouting department and the assistant general managers. The scouting department all need new contracts after this season, and a new general manager will want to hand-pick the assistant general manager that he surrounds himself with. According to CanucksArmy’s Irfaan Gaffar, there could be massive changes in both departments.
“Oh, there’s going to be a lot [of changes],” Gaffar shared on Wednesday’s episode of DFO Insider Edition. “The scouting department, I believe they all need contracts, and I think that department is going to be completely overhauled. I think that assistant general managers are going to be completely overhauled. And I think that that is the way that you have to run this business. You can’t go in and run it back with people that clearly weren’t able to make proper decisions in trying to get a hockey team to where they want to go. One playoff series win in the last forever isn’t going to cut it.
“Now, I’m not saying that the new general manager’s job is to come in and compete for the playoffs, because it’s not. It goes back to what I talked about with the Nashville Predators. It’s about organizational structure. It’s, can you align with the owner and the general manager, and the president and everyone in between to get to where you want to go, and that’s eventually, build a team to contend for Stanley Cups.”
While the complete list of five has not been released, names such as Ryan Johnson, Evan Gold, Brett Peterson, Ryan Bowness, Jamie Langenbrunner, and Pierre Dorion are still in the mix. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman shared that the Canucks interviewed Martin Madden and Scott White later in the process, and could potentially still be in the running. However, Gaffar has a hunch on who might be the next Canucks GM:
“My money would be on Evan Gold. I think that is someone they’ve looked at and have been looking at that has interviewed well. I think there’s obviously been mutual interest in both sides for that position. So, we’ll just have to wait and see.”
