As the Vancouver Canucks‘ search for their next general manager, more candidates have entered the conversation for the position.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, there are two more names to keep an eye on: Martin Madden and Scott White.
Madden has been interviewed by the team, according to Friedman, who brought up both names on Wednesday’s edition of 32 Thoughts. Friedman added that he isn’t sure if Madden has made the Canucks’ final five candidates for the role. Friedman also mentioned that people are unsure if Madden would want to work a high-profile job like the Canucks’ GM position. Finally, Friedman reported that White became a candidate late in the search, but wasn’t sure if he had been interviewed yet.
Madden has worked for the Anaheim Ducks for 18 seasons, largely in the scouting department. He joined the team in 2008 as the director of amateur scouting and has held the position throughout his tenure with the team, while also being named assistant general manager for the 2020-21 season. He also spent seven seasons as an amateur scout for the New York Rangers from 1998 to 2005, and an additional three with the Carolina Hurricanes from 2005 to 2008.
White has worked for the Dallas Stars organization for 21 seasons, largely overseeing Dallas’ minor league team, the Texas Stars. Starting as the director of hockey operations for the then-Iowa Stars from 2005 to 2009, he became the general manager for Texas in 2009, a position he held until 2025. He also became a director of hockey operations for Dallas in 2013, holding that position for three years before he was promoted to assistant general manager in 2016.
The Canucks are in need of a new GM after firing Patrik Allvin last month. He had served as the team’s GM for four and a half seasons, but was fired after a disappointing season which saw Vancouver finish last in the league with a 25-49-8 record.
The new GM appears to be set to receive a larger role than Allvin, as president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford will also be stepping away from day-to-day operations once the transition with the new GM is complete. While it isn’t confirmed the new GM will also receive PoHO duties, there was also no indication Rutherford’s position will be replaced with another hiring either.
