Over two weeks after letting go of General Manager Patrik Allvin, the Vancouver Canucks are still in the midst of their search for his replacement.
According to Gary Mason of the Globe and Mail, the Canucks have narrowed their search down to five, listing Pierre Dorion and Ryan Johnson as final candidates:
While we do not have the exact list of five just yet, Donnie & Dhali’s Rick Dhaliwal listed Evan Gold, Ryan Bowness, Jamie Langenbrunner, and Brett Peterson as names that could still be in the mix. Shane Doan was part of the process, but according to reports out of Arizona on Monday, he appears to be out of the running to be hired in Vancouver.
Dorion spent over seven years (2016-2023) as the General Manager of the Ottawa Senators. Under his leadership, the Senators held a 225-261-59 record, with just one playoff appearance. In his first season as the front office leader, the Senators came to within one goal of a Stanley Cup Final berth, after Chris Kunitz scored the double overtime goal to send the Pittsburgh Penguins to their second consecutive Stanley Cup.
Johnson has been in the Canucks organization for the past 13 years. He joined in 2013 as a Player Development Consultant and transitioned to Director of Player Development in 2016. In 2017, Johnson was promoted to General Manager of the Utica Comets until 2021, and remained in the AHL GM role when the team was moved to Abbotsford at the end of the 2021-22 season.
The following season, Johnson was promoted from his NHL role as Director of Player Development to special assistant to the General Manager for 2022-23. He served in that role for two seasons before ultimately landing his current role as Assistant General Manager of the Vancouver Canucks, while remaining the General Manager in Abbotsford.
With Johnson at the helm of Abbotsford, he led the Canucks to the franchise’s first Championship in 2024-25. That regular season, Abbotsford finished second in the Pacific Division with a 44-24-2-2 record for 92 points. Arshdeep Bains, Aatu Räty, Sammy Blais, Christian Wolanin, and Linus Karlsson were among Abbotsford’s leading scorers in the regular season.
In the postseason, Abbotsford defeated the Tucson Roadrunners in three games of the opening qualifying round, the Coachella Valley Firebirds in four games, the Colorado Eagles in five games, the Texas Stars in six games, and the Charlotte Checkers in six games en route to their Calder Cup Championship.
The current Canucks President of Hockey Operations, Jim Rutherford, has gone to bat for Johnson to be Allvin’s successor throughout this hiring process.
UPDATE: Mason shared his belief that Dorion’s chances of being the next Canucks GM are slim to none.
