The saga surrounding Vancouver Canucks centres Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller continues to unravel as more rumours have surfaced.
According to Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman during Hockey Night in Canada’s Headlines segment, Pettersson has let the Canucks know that he wishes to stay in Vancouver and that the feeling is mutual from the team.
“I heard this week that Pettersson, who does not have no-trade protection yet, has told the Canucks that he would like to stay,” said Friedman, “and I think that their preference is to do that.”
The report comes amid the never-ending drama surrounding Pettersson and Miller. What seems to be a constant dislike of the other player has exploded into utter disdain to the point that both players seem unable to play on the same team.
Friedman also reported that, while Miller will be playing in Saturday’s game against the Edmonton Oilers, he was very close to being held out of the lineup due to trade precautions. Friedman mentioned that the Canucks were close to a deal with who he believed to be the New York Rangers, but that trade is off right now.
With most of the Rangers’ blueline subject to trade rumours, particularly Will Borgen, Zac Jones, Ryan Lindgren and K’Andre Miller, it’s possible that one of those blueliners was part of the return for Miller, considering the Canucks’ need for another defenceman.
Based on both reports from Friedman, it seems possible that Saturday night’s game against the Edmonton Oilers will be Miller’s final game as a Canuck, while Pettersson will continue to stay with the team.
Pettersson has had a disappointing season amidst all of the drama with himself, Miller, and the team. He has just 10 goals and 19 assists for 29 points in 38 games played. Miller hasn’t been much better, as he has just eight goals and 21 assists for 29 points in 34 games.
