On Friday, the Vancouver Canucks will make their initial selections in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft, with two picks in the first round.
As draft week kicks off, Daily Faceoff‘s Steven Ellis published his latest mock draft on Monday. With the Toronto Maple Leafs expected to take Gavin McKenna first overall, and reports that the San Jose Sharks are targeting Chase Reid second overall, the Canucks’ pick at third is the first one where things really get interesting.
Centreman Caleb Malhotra has been the favourite potential target for the Canucks for some time, including in Ellis’ previous mock draft. Now, with the draft on the horizon, Ellis is among a number of pundits who believe Vancouver will instead opt for Swedish winger Ivar Stenberg at third overall. On Stenberg, Ellis writes:
“I have had heavy doubts for a while now that the Canucks would select Caleb Malhotra at No. 3. Some scouts pushed back, saying they felt Vancouver would still do it. Now, less so, so we’ll see. Blackhawks would absolutely love this. Stenberg is strong with the puck, has a fantastic shot and might have the second-best hockey sense of anyone in the draft behind McKenna’s. Stenberg’s production fell as the season wore on, but he still had one of the best seasons by a U-19 player in recent SHL history. Stenberg’s ceiling might not be as high as McKenna’s from an offensive production standpoint. But if you’re looking for someone who excels in more facets of the game, Stenberg is the best choice.”
Stenberg had 11 goals and 33 points in 43 games with Frölunda HC this past season. He also impressed in his IIHF World Juniors debut, tallying four goals and 10 points in seven games. That included a goal and two assists in Sweden’s 4-2 win over Czechia in the Final.
Vancouver’s second selection in the first round comes at 24th overall, acquired from the Minnesota Wild in the Quinn Hughes trade. This time around, Ellis has the Canucks selecting Vancouver Giants winger and Penticton native Mathis Preston:
“Preston’s strong showing at the U-18s helped boost his stock in a big way. He finished with six points in five games while being one of the team’s top all-around offensive threats. He was a puck-possession machine, and he consistently got the puck into high-danger areas. Preston is an undeniably talented player who could become a top-six threat down the line. Preston has a remarkable shot and often wastes no time firing in the back of the net from the slot. His shot looks NHL-ready right now.”
The 2026 NHL Entry Draft kicks off on Friday at 4 p.m. PT from Buffalo, New York. Rounds 2 through 7 run starting on Saturday at 8 a.m. PT.
