Canucks Player Power Rankings – October 31st, 2016

Oct 31, 2016, 10:00 EDTUpdated: Invalid DateTime

Remember last week when the Canucks were fun and scored goals? Those were the days. They played three times this week and scored twice. It’s hard to separate the “meh” from the “ugh” and the “yikes” from the “yawn”, but at least Troy Stecher is around.
1. Troy Stecher:
Who else? Sure, the Canucks haven’t won a game with him in the line-up, but it’s only a matter of time. He might not be able to save the Canucks powerplay, solve their scoring woes, or erase their defensive issues, but he is trying his best and it is fun to watch. When you stifle a McDavid chance, you’re more than real good – you’re really good.
2. Bo Horvat:
Bo Horvat is one of the few guys on this team who consistently looks like he could make something happen when he is in the offensive zone. He is also taking his Next Canucks Captain campaign very seriously, speaking like a seasoned veteran instead of a 21-year-old kid.
3. Jannik Hansen:
A week into the season and Jannik Hansen has already reclaimed his spot alongside the Sedins. This timely goal from Saturday night saved the Canucks from going seven straight periods without a goal.
4. Jacob Markstrom:
As if playing goalie for a team that almost never scores wasn’t enough, Markstrom is being dragged into the physical part of the game, too. You gotta pity the guy.
5. Ryan Miller:
Ryan Miller wasn’t at fault for the Canucks losses this week. He comes in after Markstrom because his Halloween costume appears to be “Ryan Miller wearing a hat”.
6. Sven Baertschi:
It has been a week of missed chances for Sven Baertschi, but he did get a point. He was also the subject of an almost punny tweet from @Canucks:
7. Alex Edler:
Usually Chris Tanev going down would mean a bad week for Alex Edler, but now he gets to play mentor to the greatest Canucks rookie defenseman since Ben Hutton. That’ll be something to tell his grandkids.

8. Markus Granlund:
This is the kind of week where a player can look just okay and land himself in the top-10. Keep doing your best, Markus.
9. Brandon Sutter:
Like Granlund, Sutter was just okay. His second week was a lot less heroic and eventful than his first week. Sutter is one point away from 200 in his career, so hopefully some more time on the power play with Powerplay Superstar Troy Stecher will help him cash in.
10. Ben Hutton:
Poor Ben Hutton was personally victimized by Connor McDavid this week.
11. Erik Gudbranson:
Based on his After Hours interview with Scott Oake and Cassie Campbell, Erik Gudbranson is a really cool guy. Counterpoint – this tweet:
12. Chris Tanev:
Tanev didn’t play this week due to injury, but he gets points for the impressive reactionary kick he whipped out when Jacob Markstrom scared him. Look at him flail!

13. Henrik and Daniel Sedin:
Even on a bad week, I can usually find something cool to share from these two. This week, the best I’ve got is Daniel Sedin appearing to summon the Sportsnet logo like it’s some kind of Pokemon.
14. Jake Virtanen:
Jake Virtanen ruffled some feathers this week by speaking openly about his lack of ice time. Many think Virtanen is playing hurt despite his dismissal of the suggestion. This kid lives for drama. After two and a half relatively poor games with limited ice time, Virtanen set up what could have been a key goal for the Canucks. It’s a roller coaster with this kid, but at least he’s done something memorable this week.
15. Brendan Gaunce:
This is the only notable moment from Brendan Gaunce’s week:
16. Alex Burrows, Derek Dorsett, etc:
Though the aforementioned Chris Tanev has been the biggest blow to the Canucks’ chances, the injury bug is hitting the forwards as well. Jayson Megna is also included in this group as far as I recall.
17. Luca Sbisa:
This basically sums it up:
18. Philip Larsen:
See above. Also, this:
19. Jack Skille:
It’s not so much that Skille has been bad, it’s that he hasn’t really been anything.
20. Nikita Tryamkin:
The tall Russian hasn’t played a minute for the Canucks this season but his fitness and his willingness – or lack thereof – to play in the AHL are the talk of the town. To keep things dramatic, he’s also out here liking Instagram posts about teams beating the Canucks.
21. Loui Eriksson:
Goalless on the season (unless we count the own-goal against Calgary) and demoted from the Sedin line, it’s hard to imagine a worse start to the season for Loui. The guy looks lost.
