Except for
the Utica Comets, the Vancouver Canucks prospects have all finished playing for the
year and are busy training to hopefully earn a roster spot at their next level
in the Fall.  With that, these regular
prospect reports will be finished until October.  Until then, pleas enjoy the last prospect report
covering all the details on prospects we have:

Cole
Cassels was the only Canucks prospect to play in the Memorial Cup and what a post
season he has had.  Having shut down
Conner McDavid and winning the OHL Championship, he was named
Player of the Week before being placed in to a shutdown
role being matched against Leon Draisitl where his Oshawa Generals dominated
the tournament and won the Memorial Cup!
Sportsnet even had this to say about Cassels:
Winner:
Oshawa centre Cole Cassels. The play of former NHLer Andrew Cassels’ son has
been the subject of a couple of missives in this space over the last few weeks.
He didn’t have his best game in the final but his body of post-season work
suggests that Vancouver landed a great pick when taking him in the third round
a couple of years back. Again, USA Hockey didn’t think he could help at the
world juniors? He was exactly the player the Americans needed.
Cassels is
currently celebrating and has been granted a recovery period.  He is expected to join the Utica Comets in
the Calder Cup final if he is healthy enough.  Ben Hutton and Jared McCann have been sent home to start their off-season training.
In other
news, we reached the June 1st deadline and have not heard any signs
of Miles Liberati being signed by the Canucks, and this means he is draft eligible
again this year.  It is not surprising he
wasn’t signed, but when you look at the Canucks signing Anton Cederholm last
summer you have to wonder what they see in him and not Liberati.
Not in the CHL, but the Canucks are still considering their options with NCAA prospect Patrick McNally.  The Canucks have until August 15th to sign him or he becomes a free agent.  He may be eligible to return to school for a fifth year, as he sat out a year, in which case the Canucks would retain his rights until 30 days after he leaves.  If the Canucks don’t sign him this summer I have my doubts they will in the future.

In the ECHL
the only remaining player was Joe Cannata.
He returned from an injury in the third round and became the defacto
starter for the Ontario Reign.  He
brought his team to game 7 but they ultimately lost.  In the playoffs, Cannata posted a .904 save
percentage in 9 games.  In the last round
he made 163 saves on 178 shots, which was good for a .916.
He is a now a UFA so we will watch to see if the Canucks re-sign him.
That’s it for the Canucks prospects this season!  Hope you enjoyed the coverage.  We will see you in the Fall.  In the mean time, look out for the Comets coverage as there is still much activity going on in the American league.
