Abbotsford Canucks defenceman Wyatt Kalynuk is among the 25 players selected to Team Canada for the 2022 Spengler Cup in Davos, Hockey Canada announced Thursday afternoon.
Kalynuk, 25, has two goals and 10 points in 21 games with Abbotsford to start the 2022–23 American Hockey League season. The left-handed defenceman signed a one-year, two-way NHL deal with the Vancouver Canucks back in July.
The Philadelphia Flyers originally selected Kalynuk in the seventh round (No. 196 overall) of the 2017 NHL Draft, but they never signed him to an entry-level contract. Kalynuk spent three seasons at the University of Wisconsin, scoring at least 25 points each year, before joining the Chicago Blackhawks organization in 2020.
The Spengler Cup will take place from Boxing Day to New Years’ Eve, with Team Canada looking to repeat as champions from 2019 and win for the tournament-record 17th time. The annual invitational tournament typically features a mix of national teams and European clubs competing for the same title.
Former Canucks bench boss Travis Green will coach Team Canada at the tournament. Team Canada’s goaltending tandem will be made up of Michael Hutchinson and former Canucks prospect Michael DiPietro.
