The Vancouver Canucks might be confident in their abilities to return to the playoffs, but the oddsmakers aren’t convinced.
Betting and professional sports have never been more tied at the hip than they are today, and the odds betting platforms provide have become a pretty valuable asset in judging how analysts see any specific team’s chances of winning. But despite the strong finish to last year and their upgrades at forward, the Canucks are not a betting favourite in the NHL.
Based on the consensus of several sportsbooks, VegasInsider.com  currently has the Canucks placed at +5000 odds to win the Stanley Cup, the 19th highest in the NHL. Of the five comparable sites used who’ve released their futures odds including PointsBet, BetMGM and FanDuel, all of them have Vancouver at the same level.
If those betting odds prove accurate, the Canucks will end up in nearly the exact same place they did last season. For example, in BetMGM’s over-under ratings Vancouver’s threshold is set at 92.5 points, half a point higher than the 2021-22 Canucks finished with.
What’s even more interesting are the other teams that sportsbooks have put in the Canucks atmosphere. On one side, BetMGM has given the same +5000 odds to the Dallas Stars, who squeaked into the playoffs as the West’s first wild card and took the Calgary Flames the distance in their opening-round matchup.
But on the other hand, two other clubs have the same odds as Vancouver across three sites: the Detroit Red Wings, who finished 18 points behind the Canucks last season, and the Ottawa Senators, who had a huge offseason by landing both Claude Giroux and Alex DeBrincat.
Vancouver’s odds in other departments are not much better. In the battle for the Western Conference championship VegasInsider.com has the Canucks tied for eighth with the Nashville Predators at +2200, while the Pacific Division winner odds have them on an island in fifth at +1100.
The Pacific title race is particularly noteworthy. While the Canucks have been put a healthy distance away from the three teams below them at +8000 odds – San Jose, Anaheim and Seattle – they’re also 650 points away from the fourth highest team, Los Angeles at +450.
