The Vancouver Canucks‘ search for a practice facility continues.
On Wednesday, X user Ryan Bains snapped and posted a photo of top Canucks brass — including Jim Rutherford and Patrik Allvin — walking down a staircase at Rosemary Brown Recreation Centre in South Burnaby.
The two individuals with Rutherford and Allvin are Canucks president of business operations Michael Doyle and Dax Aquilini, son of team co-owner Roberto Aquilini.
According to CanucksArmy‘s Irfaan Gaffar, the Canucks’ brass were also at Brittania Ice Rink earlier in the day.
While Brittania’s proximity to Rogers Arena — roughly a 10-minute drive — makes it an ideal location for a practice facility, the structure itself is outdated and wouldn’t be up to NHL standards in its current form. Even with an upgrade to the rink scheduled for completion this fall, the Canucks would need to do significant work on Brittania if they actually wanted to turn it into a working NHL practice facility.
Back to Burnaby: A major draw of Rosemary Brown — which opened in spring 2024 — would be its two sheets of ice, along with its proximity to Vancouver International Airport. But realistically, asking players to drive 30+ minutes to get to their practice facility doesn’t seem like something the team wants to do.
The Canucks have seemingly left no stone unturned in their long search for a practice facility, visiting sites in Richmond, North and South Burnaby, and of course out at UBC. The visit to Rosemary Brown could be another in a long list the Canucks’ brass have checked in on in recent years.
Whether it be Brittania, Rosemary Brown, or some other facility we haven’t yet heard about, Jim Rutherford seemed confident that one day the Canucks will shed their title of being the only NHL team without a practice facility. Of course, Rutherford joked that that day may come long after his time with the Canucks — and on this earth — have concluded, but it will get done, according to the Canucks’ president.
One day, at least.
