Vancouver Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin spoke to the media on Wednesday morning to address his team’s 0–5–2 start to the 2022–23 regular season.
For more than 10 minutes, Allvin fielded questions related to the Canucks’ young core, the possibility of embarking upon a rebuild, and the future of head coach Bruce Boudreau.
“I definitely have faith in this core. I think we have a lot of good and young players here,” Allvin said. “I believe we’re the sixth-youngest team in the league on the opening night roster.
“This young group still has a lot of things to learn, and part of it being facing adversity here and how they come out of it.”
When asked about a potential rebuild, Allvin referenced his time in the Pittsburgh Penguins organization between 2006 and 2022.
“It’s interesting, the rebuild word,” Allvin said. “I’ve been part of a rebuild, I came in late in the previous organization and we were able to rebuild and win three Cups. I still think that we’re building something here every day, we’re not done.
“I think that was something we wanted to accomplish this summer, was changing the culture, raising the bar, having higher standards and bringing in younger players, character players, and making sure we’re always looking at options here.”
After providing injury updates on Brock Boeser, Quinn Hughes, and Curtis Lazar, Allvin finally moved onto the topic of Boudreau, answering a question about whether the head coach has management’s “full support.”
“Yeah, the coaching staff from day one, we have good communication and we’re working together and we’re going to find a way to get out of this,” Allvin said.
The Canucks are currently the National Hockey League’s only winless team through the first two weeks of the regular season, ranking dead last in both the Pacific Division and the league-wide standings with two points in seven games thanks to two overtime losses.
