Surrey product Arshdeep Bains scored to give the Vancouver Canucks a 1–0 lead over the Calgary Flames midway through the third period of Friday’s game at the 2022 Young Stars Classic in Penticton.
With goaltenders Arturs Silovs and Dustin Wolf perfect through two periods, both teams entered the final frame looking to open the scoring.
Bains, who signed with the Canucks in the spring as an undrafted free agent, finally beat Wolf with 14:02 remaining in regulation time. The 21-year-old winger slammed the rebound of a Chase Wouters shot past Wolf to put the Canucks up 1–0 over the Flames.
Linus Karlsson also assisted on Bains’ first goal in a Canucks sweater.
Bains joined the Canucks organization after leading the entire Western Hockey League with 112 points (43 goals, 69 assists) in 68 games with the Red Deer Rebels during the 2021–22 regular season.
The 6’1″, 184-pound forward added four goals and 10 points in 10 games with the Rebels during the 2022 Ed Chynoweth Cup playoffs. He ultimately took home the Bobby Clarke Trophy as the 2022 WHL scoring champion.
Thanks to a late goal by Tristan Nielsen, the Canucks currently lead the Flames by a 2–0 score in the dying minutes of the third period. Expect to see a lot more from Bains as the Canucks prospects face the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday and the Edmonton Oilers on Monday.
