The Vancouver Canucks will bring back their special black alternate uniforms for their game against the National Hockey League’s newest franchise on Tuesday evening.
Multiple sources have confirmed to CanucksArmy that the Canucks will wear their “Flying Skate” jerseys for the second time this season in tomorrow’s game against the Seattle Kraken.
The Canucks last wore the black skate uniforms on Feb. 24, 2022, soundly defeating the Calgary Flames by a 7–1 score. They’ll hope for a similar result on Tuesday as they try to keep their fledgling playoff hopes alive.
The Canucks previously used the skate logo as their primary insignia from 1978 to 1997 before adopting the familiar orca — albeit with slightly different colouring — to coincide with the arrivals of Mark Messier and Mike Keenan.
While the skate logo was initially used as a patch on the sleeves of the Canucks’ wild “Flying V” uniforms, it eventually found its way onto the chest of the team’s yellow and black uniforms in 1985. The Canucks adopted the more subdued black skate jerseys (as seen during the 1994 run and against the Flames earlier this year) in 1989.
The Canucks badly need two points against Seattle to stay alive in the playoff race. If the Canucks lose in any fashion, they’re eliminated; if the Dallas Stars pick up even a single point against the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday, the Canucks are eliminated. But if the Canucks win and the Golden Knights win in regulation, the Canucks will still be in the hunt.
