Welcome back to the WDYTT, the only hockey column on the internet with true staying power.
Speaking of staying power, it’s not something we think about very often in the context of the Vancouver Canucks. They’re in the midst of a rebuild, which means that everyone is focused on the pending primes of their core players, not the eventual ends of their careers.
But time marches on. And since we asked you last week about which Canucks might be next to depart the team, we figured it was only fair to poll you this week about which are going to stick around the longest.
If we’re just going by contract length, Zeev Buium is signed until 2035. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that Buium will remain with the Canucks that long, or that someone else won’t stick around even longer than that.
Overall, it’s a pretty difficult thing to predict. If you had asked Canucks fans the same question back in 2015, no one would have predicted it was recent third-round selection Guillaume Brisebois who would be the longest-tenured. And yet, here in the year 2026, he is.
So, we’re asking you to cast your gaze another decade (or longer) into the future, and do your best to prognosticate who will be the last current Canuck to remain a Canuck. Who will be the last 2026-27 Canuck standing?
This week, we’re asking:
Which current Canuck will stay with the Canucks the longest past this date?
Let it be known in the comment section.
Who do you think will be the next Vancouver Canuck traded away?
You answered below!
Rickster64:
Notorious D.O.C.
JCanuck:
I have always thought DeBrusk would go in the right situation. He had a couple of good games but probably won’t get much more than a second.
Reubenkincade:
Rossi will be next. If he gets a second, take it and run.
Nanaimo Bars:
It all depends on what depth the Canucks have to supplement the departure of an established vet.
If Hronek is traded, they need someone to fill top-four minutes.
If Rossi is traded, they need at least a 3C to step in right away.
Etcetera.. Etcetera..!
HFI Mexico:
Please god, let it be DeBrusk or Boeser because they are blocking younger players into the top-six. It’s a catch-22, because we need to play these guys in the top-six to get a return, but we need to develop 88 into the top-six consistently, as well, for example.
I cannot see us going into next season with these players on the roster, and possibly Rossi, as they will just be prolonging the rebuild by blocking development of our younger players.
In reality, we will wait to the trade deadline and move fringe one-year contract players, most likely.
ParodyGuy:
I could see DeBrusk moving in January and then a flurry of UFA trades come February.
If Johnson has shown anything, it’s that he will be patient and then do a series of moves in a short period of time.
Jibsys:
I don’t think we see any trades until the new year and that’s why I am going with Demko here. He has been a good Canuck, but I think he will come back, play well for a stretch, and there will be a competitive team out there that are willing to take a stab at him with retention.
The Canucks shouldn’t carry three goalies and Demko is not their future. They need to pull out all the stops to move on and, as harsh as it sounds, get him off the books.

My guess is that DeBrusk is probably the next to go. There are quite a few teams looking for top-six offence from the wings and he fits the bill. JDB is versatile in that he can play up and down the lineup and his contract is not as onerous as many believe. While he is probably no one’s first choice, enough teams are in the hunt for players that there will be some demand. Return could be a late first (optimistic), but more likely a second and third or two seconds. There is nothing stopping the Canucks from taking higher deferred picks (‘29/’30) to juice the return.
Pettersson, Boeser, and Hronek all have trade protection which affects their chances of movement. DOC, Cotter and Chytil seem more like TDL moves, and Rossi is a bit of a wild card.
defenceman factory:
This management team does not leak, broadcast, hint, or even foreshadow what is going on. They just aren’t providing any insight in to what trades are being discussed or even considered.
While management may have firm ideas on which players will be around for awhile and which will be traded, I doubt they have an order for when players will be moved. Timing will be dictated by two factors; the quality of offers from other teams and the readiness of internal replacements. Trade clauses may also be a factor. We can only guess at when those conditions are met.
Chytil’s recent play, the reasonable depth at centre, and normal demand for centres; I’ll guess it’s Rossi traded next.
Hockey Bunker:
The next player traded will be to clear a spot for a permanent call up from Abbotsford, whenever that happens.
It will be trade by position …so centre up…centre gone…goalie up…goalie gone.
With all the losing, just don’t see it as an RJ priority to make a permanent move right now, as Abby is winning and that is a better environment.
Captain Tank:
I’m going to take a big swing here. Fantasy hockey, right, why not?
EP40 goes to Anaheim at the TDL for a big haul of picks plus Mikael Granlund coming back to us to fill the roster spot and clear cap space for Anaheim. Potentially Killorn or Vatrano as well. Their cap situation will pass thanks to the huge increases coming over the next few years and vets on contracts nearing their end(Killorn, Vatrano, Granlund). EP40 playing behind Leo Carlsson is probably one of the best 2C’s in the league, since he wont have to eat all the matchup minutes, and will probably be playing with Gauthier or Sennecke. We also know that Anaheim is one of the few teams he would probably waive for. Pat Verbeek is flush with draft picks(all their firsts and three seconds this year) but the list of teams willing to accept futures right now is pretty thin, and most other centers they could acquire fall into the same category as Granlund (aging, not a long term solution). So I see a tonne of natural fit there.
Factors working against it are Anaheim’s need for D as well(specifically RD), and whether RJ would be willing to trade him this year or not. Just have to wait and see what the TDL gives us this year.
Alex h:
I think it has to be those UFAs or RFAs. O’Connor is a UFA, and Rossi is an RFA. I think O’Connor will be traded before Rossi, because they intentionally want to get a better deal for him.
bill nazzy:
It’s tough to say who will be moved next, simply because the list of current players who will not be on next years roster is quite long…
orcaa:
I doubt anybody is going anywhere until they either are playing well enough to be wanted or healthy enough to be wanted. (DeBrusk , Boeser , Rossi , Lankinen), then (Demko and Chytil).
Also, doubt any young player gets traded either.
DeNihilist:
The ones to be moved soon, depending on the injury season starting soon, should be the rearview mirror vets whom Manny is giving all the ice time in the world to help them get their numbers AND value up.
Don’t care which ones, and hopefully by the time they are moved, they will be worth at least a third and some retention to help them out the door.
And props to the new FO and coach for sticking to this plan no matter what fans think!
graham:
I could see JDB being the next piece shipped out of town. At least from a regular roster player point of view. Maybe its a depth player like Mancini…
Magic Head:
I think Chytil will be the next one to get traded if he can stay healthy beyond the 20-game mark and continues to improve his play. Better to get something for him since he won’t be back next season as a Canuck.
RagnarokOroboros:
Teams are not ready to trade for big pieces yet. I think we will see only middling trades like the Aatu Räty trade up until the end of January.
Bigger names like DeBrusk or Boeser won’t be traded until teams have a better idea of what their needs are for a playoff run, or to fill in for injuries.
Canucks fans tend to overvalue their assets, and I don’t think we have a lot of players worth much on the trade market.
Pettersson has rehabilitated his reputation and may be worth his contract now, given how the salary landscape changed last summer. But Canucks still need to field a team that can win some games, so I don’t think they will trade him.
Hronek is having a bad year on a bad team, so he may surprise and waive his no-trade protection.
I’m guessing the next big player to be traded will be Oleksiak. Teams will want him for his size and veteran presence. Hopefully, he can clean up his defensive game.
Harold Drunken:
If we’re being honest, I can’t see other teams lining up for any of the players we might wish to part with. If Jake goes on one of his streaks, they might suck someone into giving it up for him, otherwise, their next trade is going to be Paul Cotter at the deadline, just like they planned.
kanucked:
DeBrusk is probably the betting favourite; however, if there was a decent offer, he would have been traded already. I think it will be DOC. He’s on an expiring deal and not playing that well. Not sure he nets a second round pick, but the Canucks might take a third round pick and some change to get ahead of the market.
Obann:
They have some good centers in their current lineup and also some exciting prospects. They should try to find a team which would be willing to give up a reliable and young RHD for one of their centers.
Raf N:
Probably, Debrusk. But might not be until after Christmas when teams further assess their cap situation.
Bond:
My bet is O’Connor and/or Mancini in a package for another struggling young player with potential upside. DeBrusk will come closer to the deadline when he finally puts up enough points to garner some interest.
Geoff Kennedy:
I think DeBrusk goes first. What to watch for though, is injuries on other teams. A particular player injured may push that team to a trade it didn’t plan on making. So in effect, circumstances could result in any of the veterans being traded ahead of DeBrusk.
Dick Nixon:
And the correct answer is…
The next Vancouver Canuck to be traded will be Brooks Rogowski. He’s too valuable to waste away in Oshawa on a losing team.
