Welcome back to WDYTT, the only hockey column on the internet that’s basically a choose-your-own-adventure.
Speaking of choice, you might get a choice as to which hockey team to cheer for, but you don’t get much choice beyond that. As fans and media personalities, we don’t have any real control over the fates of the teams we follow. We hope, we predict, we make opinions, but at the end of the day, the only folks that have any say in how the team does is the team itself.
It’s a notion that is increasingly relevant to the 2024/25 Vancouver Canucks.
The 2023/24 Canucks did a lot to restore faith in the franchise. Now, a year later, the current edition of the team is doing plenty to erode that faith.
As of this writing, the Canucks are on the very precipice of dropping out of a playoff spot. By the time you read these words, it may have already happened.
Either way, there’s still plenty of season left to go. And, as we outlined at the start there, fans only really get one say in the matter, and it’s this: believe…or don’t.
So, right here, right now, in the present moment, we’re checking in to gauge your current level of belief.
This week, we’re asking:
Do you still believe the 2024/25 Vancouver Canucks will make the Stanley Cup Playoffs?
Let it be known in the comment section!
Make a Canucks-related prediction for the year 2025.
Your predictions are below!
ShawnAntoski:
My predictions: Cup drought goes up to 54 years; Allvin doubles down to appease Aquaman; no 2025 premium picks; and the Canucks sell low on a talented player.
Wonder, IF I bat a 1.000 or close to it?
kanucked:
The funny thing about 2025 is that it seems like almost everything is on the table. Except for Hughes, anyone is available. Management could also double down on the existing core. I’m going off the board and predict that the Canucks will have a new coach next season. Tocchet’s contract expires at the end of this season and neither party has pushed to re-sign.
burnabybob:
Canucks will miss the playoffs, but will finally get a break in the draft lottery and pick in the top three.
Matthew White:
Predictions:
- A trade will be made to improve defense, but it won’t be a blockbuster trade, and the team core will remain intact, including both Pettersson and Miller.
- Once the full team is back intact (Hughes, Hronek, Petey), they’ll finally have a chance to perform as designed, and will be pretty hard to beat in the second half, having a good enough streak to make the playoffs and continue to be contenders.
- Toxic fandom will continue unabated, with 50,000 tweets posted before the end of the 1st period of every game, asserting “we suck,” “fire Tocchet,” “season over,” “I give up,” and other endless whining and cross-carrying.
- Tocchet will sign a new contract and remain coach, eventually leading the team to the finals within 2-3 years.
Magic Head:
J.T. Miller will be traded to the Rangers.
Lankinen will sign an extension.
Boeser will be traded at the trade deadline.
If the Canucks are well out of a playoff spot before the TDL, Demko, Pettersson, and Hronek will be traded.
bruce donice:
Once the injured players return to the lineup, the leadership put their heads down and put the team on their back leading the team back into the playoffs. Willander signs a professional contract at the end of his college season and joins the AHL Canucks to help them win a Calder Cup.
Kootenaydude:
Canucks miss the playoffs by one point. Right behind the Calgary Flames.
alpacaduck:
Tocchet will follow both the Adams curse and the Canuck coach reality and not finish 2025 with the Canucks.
Said it before, got downvoted to hell, will say it again. It’s feeling a lot like Willie Desjardins and Travis Green. Player coaches with structure and “hardness” or “compete is in our nature” or “relentless” that have a defined shelf life.
Willie D had exactly one good season in 2015, sucked in 2016 and lost the room, and was fired after the 2016-2017 season.
Green had exactly one good season in 2020, sucked in 2021 and lost the room, and fired in the 2021-2022 season.
Tocchet had exactly one good season in 2023, didn’t do so hot in 2024 with room rifts, and his contract expires after the 2024-2025 season.
PavelBuuure10:
Canucks Core gets blown up. I prefer to keep Boeser.
Miller or Petterson gets moved.
Coconuts Grow:
JT Miller for Dawson Mercer & Simon Nemec.
54 years on…..?:

Prediction:
PA will hit the reset button and more than once. I believe at least two big trades will happen.
Rationale:
This version of the Canucks has not endeared themselves to management in several crucial ways. The lack of resilience, cohesion and accountability has to be a punch in the gut for a management group whose gold standard (Crosby) is set to an extremely high level. The pursuit of excellence, professionalism and winning all go hand in hand and clearly some or all of these traits are currently lacking to some degree on this roster. I don’t expect this management group to tolerate mediocrity if they don’t/can’t see the long term upside and at this point they may not anymore.
Hockey Bunker:
Canucks and Islanders do a one-for-one trade .
Miller to the Isles and Horvat to the Canucks.
Back to the future trade similar to Linden returning “home” to Vancouver.
Horvat is younger and a solid team guy.
Miller is $500k cheaper, so helps with Isles cap and is a better scorer.
Canucks turn it on in the second half and make it to the conference final.
Craig Gowan:
The Canucks will miss the playoffs this season, and significant changes will occur in the make up of the team as a result.
Bartholomew Gimble:
I’ve been a fan since Western League days and I hate to be negative, but realistically I predict:
- Canucks miss the playoffs by at least 6 points.
- Höglander gets sent to Pittsburgh, with a draft pick, for Owen Pickering and some random salaried player.
- With the team fading, Miller gets dealt at the deadline for a disappointing return.
