Everyone knows that Bruce Boudreau loves at least two things: hockey and professional wrestling.

The former Vancouver Canucks head coach introduced a championship belt to present to the team’s top player after every victory during his tenure. He also repeatedly expressed his fondness for WWE star Kevin Owens.

Owens wore a free Canucks jersey gifted to him by Boudreau at a WWE show in Vancouver last September. Chants of “Bruce, there it is” rang down from the crowd at Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver as Owens patrolled the ring.

The Canucks fired Boudreau in January and replaced him with former TNT broadcaster Rick Tocchet, but that hasn’t put a stop to the partnership between Owens and the 68-year-old head coach.

Both Owens and Zayn are French-Canadian, respectively hailing from the Quebec municipalities of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu and Laval. Boudreau is from Toronto.

Widely regarded as a “players’ coach” and one of the most charismatic personalities in the NHL, Boudreau guided the Canucks to a 50–40–13 record in 103 games over parts of two seasons with the team.

The Canucks hired Boudreau midway through the 2021–22 campaign to replace the fired Travis Green. Less than a week later, the Canucks brought in Jim Rutherford as their new president of hockey operations and interim general manager.

Boudreau and Rutherford never seemed to get along all that well in Vancouver (for one, Rutherford didn’t actually have any say in hiring Boudreau) and their working partnership lasted only a little more than a year. For now, Boudreau is unemployed in the hockey world.

During his long coaching career, Boudreau has worked behind the bench of the Washington Capitals, Anaheim Ducks, Minnesota Wild, and Canucks. Although he’s never won the Stanley Cup, Boudreau’s teams have assembled a record of 617–342–128 over parts of 15 NHL regular seasons.
