Day 9 at the 2026 IIHF World Championship featured a lighter schedule for the Vancouver Canucks’ representatives, with only Aatu Räty in action.
Taking on Austria, Finland continued its dominant tournament run with another victory, remaining one of just two undefeated teams at the event. Only the hosts (Switzerland) have yet to lose, and they are atop the tournament with a greater goal differential.

Austria vs. Finland

Austria managed to keep the Finns at bay for much of the opening period before Mikael Granlund finally broke through in the final minute of the frame. That goal sparked Finland offensively, as they followed it up with a three-goal second period en route to a comfortable 5-2 victory.
With some new linemates for the matchup, Räty centred Sakari Manninen and Jesse Puljujärvi on Finland’s third line. The trio combined for four points in the win, with Räty extending his point streak to all six tournament games.
The play developed after Puljujärvi found Räty in the slot for a one-timer opportunity. Although the Austrian netminder made the initial stop, Manninen crashed the crease and buried the rebound for his first goal of the tournament.
Räty finished the game with a primary assist, two shots, four penalty minutes, and a minus-1 rating. He continues to operate at a point-per-game pace with six points (three goals, three assists) — additionally, he’s plus–3 while winning faceoffs at a 68.25% rate.
Monday’s action will feature Filip Hronek and Czechia taking on Norway, while Max Sasson and the United States face Hungary.
All four Canucks representatives are expected to be back in action on Tuesday, as they close out the preliminary rounds. Räty (Finland) will face the Swiss, as the two top teams clash to finish undefeated. Sasson (USA) will face Austria, Linus Karlsson (Sweden) will face Slovakia, while Filip Hronek (Czechia) will close the tournament against Canada.
