As the NHL’s March 6th Trade Deadline approaches, the Vancouver Canucks rumour mill isn’t going to slow down anytime soon.
On Tuesday’s edition of Insider Trading, TSN’s Darren Dreger reported that there is “renewed interest” in Canucks forward Elias Pettersson.
“Yeah, it’s possible,” Dreger said. “We’re talking about Elias Pettersson, because there’s renewed trade interest in Pettersson. Now, the Vancouver Canucks, frankly, are hoping that that interest progresses into a worthy trade offer that they can consider. That’s not the case to this point. I can tell you that Petterson’s agents from CAA are well aware of the trade discussions that are happening around their player, but they’re not going to include Pettersson, who has a no-move clause, until it gets to a point where there is a potential deal. So it’s still early, but there is a bit more buzz around Pettersson now.”
Pettersson has been the topic of trade rumours in recent years, as his play has fallen off from the level it was at when he signed his eight-year extension with the Canucks in Spring 2024. After putting up 102 points in 2022-23 and 89 in 2023-24, Pettersson finished last season with 45 points through 64 games and is on pace to finish this season with 52 points. Pettersson is in year two of his eight-year deal, which carries a cap hit of $11.6 million. The entire duration of Pettersson’s contract carries a full no-move clause, meaning the Canucks would have to get Pettersson to agree to a destination if they were going to trade him.
As for the Canucks’ deadline plans, it seems like a foregone conclusion (and rightfully so) that the club will move out pending unrestricted free agents such as Teddy Blueger and Evander Kane. Many fans would like to see the Canucks also try to ship out a veteran with term on their contract as well as the Canucks attempt to get younger and rebuild in the post-Quinn Hughes era.
That era, of course, includes Pettersson, who the Canucks drafted with the 5th overall pick in 2017. Do you think the Canucks will move on from Pettersson? Let us know in the comments section below!
