The Vancouver Canucks will carry $1.7-million in cap overages into next season, according to information provided to CanucksArmy from PuckPedia.com.

The overages in the cap are due to Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes getting the maximum $850k each in A bonuses, PuckPedia reports.

There’s the possibility for the overages to reach over $2-million if Pettersson wins an award.

It’s good that Pettersson and Hughes hit bonus’ given their strong seasons, but the news shouldn’t have a major impact on the cap situation going into the offseason. Vancouver is projected to have $18-million in cap space this offseason.

Vancouver has two options when it comes to dealing with their overages: first, they could take the $1.7-million in overage and pay it this upcoming year, or they could split the overage over the next two seasons.

In my eyes, the Canucks would be wise to take the overage all next season based solely off the fact that the club has big name players to sign ahead of the 21-22 season. Pettersson and Hughes each will need new deals seeing significant pay raises, while other support players like Troy Stetcher, Tanner Pearson, Brandon Sutter and Jordie Benn will need fresh deals, too.
