Canucks: Sedins ‘excited’ to race head-to-head up Grouse Grind for charity on Sunday

How do you tell the Sedins apart? Well, next Sunday, it will be easy. Only one of them will win the Sedin vs. Sedin race for charity up the Grouse Grind.

The Co-Presidents of Hockey Operations for the Vancouver Canucks are set to go head-to-head in a friendly (we think) fundraiser benefiting the Sedin Family Foundation. The event is aiming to raise $75,000 for the Adopt-a-School campaign, which provides food and clothing for students in need.

Daniel and Henrik Sedin are no strangers to the Grind. For years, they competed with – and beat – team prospects half their age at the end of the Canucks’ annual summer development camp. And on a separate occasion, Daniel once completed the famous hike up Grouse Mountain 11 times in a single day.

“The Grouse Grind has been a part of our fitness program since day one, so when the chance to go head to head and do it for charity came up, we looked at each other and said, ‘let’s do it,'” Henrik told Daily Faceoff Vancouver. “It is really special to launch as part of the 100th anniversary of Grouse Mountain and to include a day of activities for kids and families as well as the race.”

While the highlight of the day will be the head-to-head race featuring the Hockey Hall of Famers, the day’s events also include a team component.

Participants will support either Team Henrik or Team Daniel and will race up the mountain after the Sedins have settled their score. The winning team will be determined based on finishing times along with the size of donations collected for the cause. Former teammate, long-time friend and one-time Canucks President himself, Trevor Linden is slated to participate in the team challenge on behalf of his Club 16 Fitness business.

“We’re excited for the race up the Grind this weekend,” Daniel said. “We’ve been doing it for many years and like that the event has been so well received in the community by participants, sponsors, and families. I think everyone is going to have a great day and Team Daniel will finish as the overall winner.”

The Grind, as many Vancouverites know from experience, is a 2.9 kilometre hike with an elevation gain of 800 metres. Due to the vertical nature of the hike, it includes more than 2,800 wooden and rocky steps. While many hikers take their time to complete the task, the Sedins will likely clock in well under an hour — especially when battling head to head.

According to its website, the Sedin Family Foundation partners with schools, community groups and social service agencies in British Columbia to identify needs and find creative and unique ways to make a difference for children and families.

The Sedin Showdown is set to begin at 10:15 am and is the featured event of day-long festivities at the top of Grouse Mountain. Tickets for the day are $10, and spectators can watch at the finish line at the top of the Grind. There will also be an awards celebration at the conclusion of the event.
