Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announced on Sunday morning that the club has assigned forward Joseph LaBate to AHL Abbotsford and recalled defenceman Kirill Kudryavtsev.
The news comes following Saturday night’s loss to the Montreal Canadiens and ahead of Sunday’s game against the Edmonton Oilers.
LaBate, 32, was recalled from Abbotsford on Monday to join the team during their five-game road trip in Pittsburgh. The 6’5″ forward suited up against the Penguins, finishing with two shots on goal and a minus-two rating in 9:32 minutes of ice time. LaBate sat in the press box for the following two games against the Nashville Predators and Canadiens.
It was a full-circle moment when LaBate put on the Canucks uniform against the Penguins. LaBate was drafted by the Canucks in the fourth round (101st overall) of the 2011 NHL draft. He made his NHL debut for the club in 2016-17. Nine years later, LaBate got to put on the Canucks uniform again.
The Burnsville, Minnesota, native has spent most of his professional career in the American League, suiting up in 460 games over 11 seasons. He has 73 goals and 84 assists for 157 points during that time, and is still looking for his first goal at the NHL level.
Kudryavtsev was drafted in the seventh round of the 2022 draft. He performed well with the Soo Greyhounds during his three years there, scoring 18 goals and 118 assists in 136 points in 202 games. He then made the jump to the American League, where he suited up in 65 games, scoring five goals and 21 assists for 26 points.
The Russian defenceman quickly earned the trust of Abbotsford Head Coach Manny Malhotra, spending time on the first power play unit, and quickly saw his ice time skyrocket. His efforts earned him a cup of coffee in the NHL at the end of last season, suiting up in two games in Vancouver, finishing with a plus-one rating while averaging 14:08 minutes of ice time.
On their Calder Cup run, Kudryavtsev was a staple on the blueline, adding a goal and nine assists for 10 points on their Championship run.
So far this season, the 21-year-old defenceman has been deployed as Abbotsford’s top defenceman, playing on both sides of special teams. He has five assists through five games this season.
Kudryavtsev will now report to Vancouver and compete with Victor Mancini and PO Joseph for a spot on the bottom pairing.
