It was a busy start to the work week for the Vancouver Canucks front office.
The hockey team announced on Monday morning that it had made a series of roster moves following injuries on Sunday to Filip Chytil and Jonathan Lekkerimäki. Both forwards were hurt in the first period of the Canucks 4-3 win over the Washington Capitals, and both have now been placed on injured reserve.
Chytil was hurt on a thunderous first period mid-ice collision with Capitals forward Tom Wilson. The Czech centre appeared dazed and needed to be helped off the ice by teammates and the Canucks medical staff. Lekkerimäki was shaken up when he hit Caps defenceman Matthew Roy along the sideboards and seemed to be favouring his shoulder. The club has provided no timelines for either injured player.
The Canucks announced the recalls of forward Joseph LaBate and defenceman Jimmy Schuldt from Abbotsford. LaBate has two goals and an assist in four AHL games this season, while Schuldt has no points in four games in the minors. Both players have limited NHL resumes. LaBate, 32, has appeared in 19 NHL games with the Canucks and Columbus Blue Jackets. He last appeared in a Vancouver uniform on March 28, 2017. Meanwhile, Schuldt, 30, has logged nine NHL games with the Vegas Golden Knights and San Jose Sharks.
In other moves on Monday, the Canucks returned Victor Mancini to AHL Abbotsford after playing four games for the big league club. The 23-year-old saw just 6:56 of ice time and got in his first NHL fight on Sunday. As a result of new rules in the NHL/NHLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement, Mancini must appear in at least one AHL game before he is eligible to be recalled by the NHL Canucks. Abbotsford does not play until its Calder Cup Championship banner-raising home opener against Ontario on Friday night. P-O Joseph will likely slide into Mancini’s spot and make his Vancouver debut on Tuesday against his former team, the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Canucks have also placed Nils Höglander on long-term injured reserve retroactive to October 7. Höglander was hurt in an October 1 preseason game in Abbotsford and required ankle surgery days later. He is expected to be out until early December.
At the moment, the Canucks have 22 players on their active roster. Defenceman Derek Forbort remains on IR, and the club has provided no update on his status since he last played on October 11 against the Edmonton Oilers.
