The Vancouver Canucks have re-assigned goaltender Ty Young to the Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL from the AHL’s Abbotsford Canucks.
The return of Thatcher Demko to the Vancouver Canucks roster has triggered a ripple effect throughout the organization, which led to Arturs Silovs reclaiming his position as Abbotsford’s top netminder.
As a result, 20-year-old Young has found himself the odd man out on the farm team and will return to the ECHL to continue developing in Kalamazoo.
What began as a worst-case scenario for the youngster, allowing three goals on his first three shots faced in his AHL debut, ended with him shouldering a heavier workload over Nikita Tolopilo.
Following a tough debut, he went on to stop 111 of his next 119 shots faced, highlighted by two games in which he allowed just one goal against.
Across five games, Young compiled a 3-2-0 record, a 2.41 goals-against average, and a .915 save percentage. It’s an impressive debut stint for a netminder who, just a few months ago, wasn’t sure if he’d be turning pro or returning to junior hockey.
Young returns to Kalamazoo, where he made an immediate impact in his first two ECHL starts earlier this season. In those games, he stopped 74 of 76 shots, earning a 1.01 goals-against average and an eye-popping .974 save percentage.
His lone loss came in a 1-0 shutout defeat to the Indy Fuel, who the Wings will host this Saturday. Young will likely get the chance to avenge that loss as he resumes his tenure in Kalamazoo.
Drafted by the Canucks in the fifth round (No. 144 overall) of the 2022 NHL Draft, the Coaldale, Alberta native has quickly established himself as a prominent piece of the Canucks’ goaltending depth chart.
While the goaltender carousel within the organization continues to turn, Ty Young will patiently wait for his next opportunity to showcase himself.
