The Vancouver Canucks have re-signed Guillaume Brisebois to a one-year, two-way extension, the club announced on Tuesday. The deal will pay the veteran defenceman $900K at the NHL level and guarantees Brisebois $325K in the minors.
The 28-year-old appeared in just nine games for AHL Abbotsford last season due to a knee injury. One of the longest-tenured players in the organization, Brisebois was a third-round pick of the Canucks in the 2015 NHL Draft. Only Thatcher Demko and Brock Boeser have seniority on Brisebois in terms of their ties to the organization.
Over the years, the Longueuil, Quebec, native has played a total of 30 NHL games, scoring one goal and adding two assists. His goal came on March 14, 2023 at home against Dallas.
Brisebois was a regular on the Abbotsford blueline in that team’s run to the Calder Cup championship a year ago. He played 24 games, scoring once and adding two helpers as the Canucks captured the AHL title.
Brisebois has dealt with serious injuries in recent years. Three seasons ago, he suffered a concussion in an NHL preseason game in Abbotsford when he was hit heavily into the end boards by Brandon Tanev late in a game against the Seattle Kraken. He was limited to just eight games that season. And last season, Brisebois underwent preseason knee surgery, which kept him out of action until the spring. Because of those injuries, Brisebois has dressed for just 68 games at all levels over the past three seasons.
Brisebois is likely to be a regular on the Abbotsford blueline next year, providing leadership and helping prospects as they work their way through the professional ranks. He is set to enter his 10th season as a player in the Canucks system. During his time with the organization, Brisebois has played under Trent Cull, Travis Green, Bruce Boudreau, Jeremy Colliton, Manny Malhotra, and Rick Tocchet.
