Following the Vancouver Canucks‘ 3-1 loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday, one particular moment of the game went somewhat viral on social media. No, not either of Nathan MacKinnon’s goals. Not Linus Karlsson’s sweet move to the backhand to open the scoring.

No, the clip that went viral was this one of Canucks captain Quinn Hughes, with over 760,000 people viewing the clip on X:

The body language debates raged on, as some fans took Hughes’s straight-legged effort as a telltale sign that he can’t wait to leave Vancouver, while others pointed out that the Canucks’ captain has logged heavy minutes and is frustrated with all the losing his team — which has sat in 30th place in the NHL standings for some time now — has done as of late.

After Thursday’s Canucks practice, both Hughes and Canucks head coach Adam Foote were asked about the captain’s visible on-ice frustrations.

“Yeah, we talk about it,” said Foote. “Quinn’s strength… is he wants to win so bad. And he knows he can make every play. He’s still young. And, you know, he’ll be the first to tell you he’s learning that when he’s tired or has had long shifts, maybe not to push it, right? The beauty is he believes he can get it done. That’s the great part about it at times. And, you know, he’s learning that there’s times where maybe get off or don’t chance it at that moment when you’re on tired legs. But, yeah, he’s a guy that probably has shown frustration here and there. We’ve had discussions about it. And he owns his own stuff. So it’s a good question. And that’s him still growing and learning.”

As for Hughes, he admitted that hiding that frustration is something he wants to get better at.

“I feel like I’ve seen pretty much everything under the sun here, good and bad, and you want to win, and losing sucks,” said Hughes. “And, I mean, I know everyone in here feels that way, and the coaching staff. You know, no one’s probably more competitive than Adam Foote, so [it’s] just something I continue to get better at.”

Hughes and the Canucks get set to take on the Utah Mammoth on Friday night, then have a quick turnaround as the Minnesota Wild are in town on Saturday.
