Vancouver Canucks’ 2023 third-round (89th overall) pick, Sawyer Mynio, is on the move to a Hitmen squad looking to make noise in the WHL playoffs.
Mynio leaves Seattle after a four-year career marked by consistent development and success. Named co-captain of the Thunderbirds earlier this season, the Kamloops native tallied 114 points (30 goals, 84 assists), 150 penalty minutes and a plus-49 rating across 196 games.
During his time with the Thunderbirds, Mynio helped the team secure back-to-back Western Conference Finals appearances, highlighted by a WHL Championship in 2022-23. While his role was more limited in those earlier seasons, he gained invaluable playoff experience and now has 40 WHL postseason games combined on his resume.
With high turnover, Seattle has embarked on a rebuilding phase in recent years, which has resulted in Mynio taking on a larger role. His ability to contribute offensively while playing a shutdown role in his own zone made him a standout for the Thunderbirds and a coveted asset for the Hitmen.
The trade follows Mynio’s first international stint, representing Team Canada at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championships. Although Canada’s tournament ended earlier than expected, Mynio gained valuable experience on the global stage. He recorded one assist, two penalty minutes, and a plus-1 rating in three games, earning his spot in a highly competitive lineup.
Mynio now joins a Calgary Hitmen squad loaded with talent. With notable prospects such as defenceman Carter Yakemchuk (Ottawa Senators) and forward Tanner Howe (Pittsburgh Penguins), Mynio becomes another key factor in their push for a deep playoff run.
Currently sitting in third place in the Eastern Conference, the Hitmen are well-positioned to make a serious push for the WHL title and a potential Memorial Cup berth. Mynio’s championship pedigree, leadership qualities, and ability to contribute in all situations make him a perfect fit for Calgary’s roster.
Now 19, Mynio can turn pro for the 2025-26 season or stay put for one last season as an overager. His first opportunity to dress with his new club will be on Sunday, January 5th, as his new team visits the Regina Pats.
