The Canadian Hockey League — home to the Quebec, Ontario, and Western Leagues — honours the nation’s most outstanding players by naming monthly all-star teams.
On Wednesday, the CHL revealed its team of the month for March, which featured a Vancouver Canucks prospect for the first time this season.
Sawyer Mynio, a Canucks 2023 third-round draft pick, was named as one of the team’s two defenders, along with San Jose Sharks’ prospect Sam Dickinson.
With three goals and nine assists over nine games, only four defenders produced more than the Kamloops, BC, native nationwide. Within the WHL, he shared the lead for points by a defenceman, remarkably being held off the scoresheet just once throughout the month.
Despite enduring injury setbacks this season, Mynio accumulated 45 points in 49 regular-season games, splitting time between the Seattle Thunderbirds and Calgary Hitmen.
Since being drafted, the offensively gifted blueliner has notched 98 points (30 goals and 68 assists) in 112 games, cementing his reputation as a dynamic presence on the backend and a tremendous value pick for the Vancouver Canucks midway through the draft.
After representing Team Canada at his first World Junior Championship over the holiday season, he was traded to the Calgary Hitmen, where he now skates in his fourth and likely final junior season.
With his sights set on a lengthy Memorial Cup run, Mynio aims to leave a lasting mark on the WHL while earning his second WHL Title. The Hitmen are currently dominating the first round of the WHL playoffs, holding a 3-0 series advantage over the Saskatoon Blades. Mynio has three assists with a plus-3 rating through three playoff games.
Having already suited up for a single game with the Abbotsford Canucks at the tailend of the 2023-24 season, Mynio will have the option to turn pro following his current year. However, the option to return as a 20-year-old overager remains an option.
