A Vancouver Canucks prospect may be in danger of missing the 2027 World Junior Championship after a controversial ruling by the International Ice Hockey Federation.
On October 30, the IIHF was ordered to reinstate Russia for all tournaments, effective immediately. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruling stated that the IIHF must allow Russia to participate in upcoming tournaments. Russia’s first eligible tournament to return would be in 48 days, at the 2027 World Junior Championship in Edmonton, Alberta.
That meant one team had to be removed. And according to the Norwegian Ice Hockey Association, Norway appears to be the nation affected by the ruling.
Here is the announcement from the Norwegian Ice Hockey Association in the press release, followed by a statement from the Norwegian Ice Hockey Federation Secretary General, Peter Salsten:
“The Norwegian Ice Hockey Association received information on Saturday from the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) that, as a result of the decision from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Friday, October 30, they are required to take necessary measures to reintegrate Russia into the Junior World Championships.”
“We are aware of the status and the measures the IIHF feels compelled to take, and will await further information from the IIHF in the coming days. We have previously made it clear where we stand on the issue of Russia’s participation, where we believe they should not be able to participate internationally as long as the war in Ukraine continues. This also clearly shows all the practical challenges and immediate consequences for everyone involved when countries are to be reinstated immediately.”
If this holds, it would affect Canucks fans. Vancouver’s most recent second-round pick, Niklas Aaram-Olsen, and his nation would not participate in the tournament.
After the CAS informed the IIHF that Russia must return, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney answered back, saying that Russian athletes will not be permitted visas to enter Canada and compete in the tournament:
“While Russia and Belorussia [sic] are supporting this illegal, unjustified, horrific war in Ukraine, as long as that’s going on, there will be none of those athletes competing for their countries in Canada,” Carney said when asked if Russian players would be denied visas. “So if you’re asking specifically about the World Juniors, the Russians will not be there.”
Norway was slated to play in Group B, with Canada, Czechia, Switzerland, and Latvia. This would have given Canucks fans guaranteed opportunities to watch Canadian prospects Caleb Malhotra and Braeden Cootes face off at least once against two of their top 2026 draft selections: 24th overall pick Adam Novotný and Czechia, and 41st overall Niklas Aaram-Olsen and Norway.
We will wait for an update from the IIHF on how they plan to handle this after the Canadian government’s ruling, but it appears Aaram-Olsen and Norway are in danger of missing the 2027 World Junior Championships.
