Trade buzz isn’t just happening in Vancouver; the Canadian Hockey League trade season is in full swing.
Less than 24 hours after Vancouver Canucks prospect Sawyer Mynio was dealt from the Seattle Thunderbirds to the Calgary Hitmen in the Western Hockey League, another Canucks draft pick is on the move — this time in the Ontario Hockey League.
Anthony Romani, a 2024 sixth-round draft pick (162nd overall), has been traded from the North Bay Battalion to the Barrie Colts, where he will team up with fellow Canucks prospect Riley Patterson, per Daily Faceoff’s Jeff Marek. The Colts, sitting atop the Eastern Conference standings and fourth in the league overall, are gearing up for a deep playoff push, and the addition of Romani bolsters their offensive depth in a big way.
The Pickering, Ontario native has established himself as a premier scorer in the OHL. Last season, in his second draft-eligible year, Romani exploded offensively, leading the league with 58 goals and finishing second in points with 111. That performance put him on the NHL radar and led to his selection by the Canucks in the sixth round of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft.
Through 194 OHL games, Romani has accumulated 91 goals and 173 points, along with a plus-37 rating. He’s added 12 goals and 16 points in 36 postseason contests for North Bay.
The talented forward has been sidelined since October 11th with a broken clavicle, limiting him to just six games in which he registered five points (two goals, three assists). While the injury has been a setback, the trade signals that Romani could be nearing a return to action, and he’ll look to bring his scoring touch to a strong Barrie lineup.
Joining the Colts will provide Romani the opportunity to team up with Patterson, the Canucks’ fourth-round pick in the same 2024 draft. Patterson, who has been a key contributor for Barrie this season, currently co-leads the team with 17 goals and is third in points with 31.
Romani becomes the third Canucks CHL prospect to be traded this season. Sawyer Mynio’s move to Calgary and Vilmer Alriksson’s pre-Christmas trade from the Guelph Storm to the Brampton Steelheads highlight the fluidity of junior hockey and the jockeying for position as teams prepare for the stretch drive and playoffs.
