The Vancouver Canucks have taken their first injury hit, but have called up an intriguing young replacement.
After missing practice on Friday and quickly then after being ruled out of Saturday’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Canucks general manager Ryan Johnson announced that centre Filip Chytil was placed on injured reserve. To replace him, recently acquired forward Jacob Quillan has been recalled from AHL Abbotsford.
Chytil was injured late in the third period against the San Jose Sharks on Thursday night after absorbing a heavy hit from defenceman Darnell Nurse. The 27-year-old centreman made it to the bench on his own. After he was checked out by the trainers for a minute of game action, Chytil returned to the ice for the final 2:56 minutes of the game as the Cauncks attempted to mount their comeback.
A Canucks representative insisted Chytil’s injury was not head-related, but rather a re-aggravation of a preseason shoulder injury. He missed the first eight games of the season with that shoulder injury, and has tallied two assists through seven games.
Quillan was acquired two weeks ago, along with Brandon Buhr, from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Aatu Räty. Quillan has made an impactful first impression in Abbotsford, scoring five goals and two assists for seven points with a plus-eight rating in his first five games in a Canucks uniform. He has been utilized down the middle of the ice, first centring Ty Mueller and Bennett Schimek, and lately filling in for the injured Braeden Cootes between Kole Lind and Trey Fix-Wolansky.
With Chytil placed on injured reserve, he is out for the next seven days and will miss at least the three games against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Anaheim Ducks, and Winnipeg Jets. If deemed fit and ready for game action, Quillan could make his Vancouver Canucks debut as early as tomorrow afternoon against his former team, the Maple Leafs.
