We are approaching the decision on where David Kampf will be taking his talents for the rest of the 2025-26 season.
According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, Kampf and his agent JP Barry have narrowed his list to three teams and are hoping to reach a decision tomorrow. Shortly after, Donnie & Dhali’s Rick Dhaliwal mentioned that he believes the Vancouver Canucks are one of those three teams:
Kampf had his contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs terminated on Friday after he cleared waivers. The Czech native and the Maple Leafs had an issue when he was sent down to the AHL to start the 2025-26 season. Kampf appeared in four games with the Marlies, picking up a lone assist and a minus-one rating.
After those games, Kampf took some time to mull over his options and did not report back to the Marlies. The Maple Leafs organization then suspended him without pay, and the two mutually agreed to terminate the contract and have Kampf find a new home for the season. He left substantial money on the table, walking away from the final two years of his four-year, $9.6 million contract, paying him $2.4 million annually.
The left-shot centre scored five goals and eight assists for 13 points with a minus-one rating in 12:24 minutes of average ice time in the NHL last season. Through his eight seasons in the NHL, Kampf has been an integral part of his team’s penalty kill, averaging at least 1:28 minutes of shorthanded ice time per game in every season, including over two minutes in six straight seasons.
In the faceoff dot, Kampf has had success throughout his career. He’s finished below 50% in just one season, resulting in him winning 51.4% of his career draws.
The Canucks are currently icing Elias Pettersson, Lukas Reichel, Aatu Räty and Max Sasson as their four centremen, have the league’s worst penalty kill (66.1%), and are fourth-last in the NHL in faceoff percentage (46%). Kampf can help the Canucks in those areas while Teddy Blueger is on the shelf, with no updates on his availability.
