Since November, a Kiefer Sherwood trade has felt like an inevitability for the Vancouver Canucks.
The Canucks wasted little time before sending out a memo to the other 31 NHL teams that they were willing to listen to offers on their veteran players, and Jim Rutherford quickly clarified that what they really meant was getting ahead of the trades they’d be making at the trade deadline anyway, like moving on from their veteran UFAs.
Headlining that list, of course, is Kiefer Sherwood, who the Canucks signed to a two-year deal at a measly $1.5 million cap hit. Sherwood, who broke the NHL single-season hits record last season and scored a career-high 19 goals, has been one of the Canucks’ most consistent performers this season. Already at 17 goals at the halfway point of the season, Sherwood is on pace for 34 goals and is arguably one of the most attractive trade chips on the NHL trade market thanks to his consistent style of play and low cap hit.
But on Saturday, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the Canucks made a new contract offer to keep Sherwood in Vancouver. On Tuesday’s edition of Donnie and Dhali — The Team, Rick Dhaliwal added some more context, stating he believes the Canucks offered Sherwood a medium term deal around $4 million annually.
“I was told that the Canucks made a very respectable offer to key for Sherwood over the weekend. Sounds like the offer was in the $4 million a year range, and medium term on years. So let’s go through this. Short term is one to two years. Long term is seven, eight years. Medium to me… is probably four to five years. The Canucks offered Sherwood 3×3 in the summer with his old agent, Allain Roy. So this is recognition that this player is now worth more term and more money. He’s at 1.5 and the Canucks… they were in the threes in the summer, which I confirmed, three times three in the summer. Now you’re, touching around the number four. This is recognition; this guy leads the team in hits, leads the team in goals, good for culture. Braeden Cootes went out of his way to say that the guy that helped me most in training camp was Kiefer Sherwood. So look, the Canucks took a stab at it. At very respectable numbers, $4 million is not chump change. It’s a pretty significant raise for a guy who’s at $1.5.”
Whether the number that the Canucks floated out was a formal offer or more conversational seems to be a point of contention behind the scenes, one thing is clear: the Canucks at least indicated to Sherwood’s camp that they’d be willing to extend him at a price below his perceived value on the open free agent market. Sherwood currently shares a first place lead with Alex Ovechkin among UFA skaters in goals, and should command a pretty penny if he hits free agency this summer.
