A few members of the Vancouver Canucks will be representing their country on the world stage.
On Wednesday, the Swedish Ice Hockey Federation announced its roster for the 2026 IIHF Men’s World Championship. Among the players named to the team are forwards Nils Hoglander, Liam Ohgren, and Linus Karlsson.
According to Rick Dhaliwal of Donnie and Dhali – The Team, Canucks defender Tom Willander was invited to the Swedish camp but elected not to go, instead turning his focus toward training.
Hoglander missed the start of the 2025-26 season after undergoing lower-body surgery in the preseason. In the 38 games he did play this year, he potted two goals and three assists for five points. This is the first time he’ll be playing for Tre Kronor in a major international tournament since the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship, where he helped his team win the bronze medal.
Hoglander also won gold at the 2016 Under-17 World Hockey Challenge and 2018 IIHF Men’s Under-18 World Championship.
Ohgren was acquired by the Canucks in the blockbuster trade that saw the team send captain Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild in December. In 51 games with Vancouver, Ohgren scored eight goals and 10 assists for 18 points. Overall, he appeared in 69 games, scoring 18 points. The Stockholm native captained Sweden to the gold medal game at the 2024 World Juniors losing to the United States in the final.
Ohgren also won gold at the 2022 U-18s, as well as bronze at the 2021 Hlinka Gretzky Cup and 2022 WJC.
The 2025-26 season marked Karlsson’s first full campaign with the Canucks. In 79 games, he notched 15 goals and 20 assists for 35 points. The 26-year-old’s international experience is limited compared to his teammates, though he played for the Swedes during the 2021-22 EuroHockey Tour.
Also named to the team is former Canucks defenceman Erik Brannstrom. Brannstrom suited up for Vancouver for a chunk of the 2024-25 season, also playing for Abbotsford. He scored eight points in 28 games in Vancouver, and another 12 points in eight games in the AHL. Brannstrom joined Lausanne HC of the National League in Switzerland this year, playing for Sweden during the EuroHockey Tour.
The 2026 Men’s Worlds are taking place in Zurich and Fribourg, Switzerland. Sweden has won bronze at each of the past two tournaments. They open up their Group B schedule against Canada on May 15.
