The Vancouver Canucks have made forward Lukas Reichel available for trade, according to Rick Dhaliwal of Donnie and Dhali — The Team. Speaking on Sportsnet 650’s Halford and Brough in the Morning on Friday morning, here’s what Dhaliwal said:
“Lukas Reichel was a healthy scratch last night. One point in 13 games, no shots on goal in the last six. With Höglander and Blueger not far away, a Lekkerimäki call-up not far away, Reichel is now available. I heard last night that you can get Reichel out of Vancouver. I think they’re okay with trying to move him is what I was told last night.”
Reichel, 23, has appeared in 13 games since the Canucks traded for him on October 24th. While the Canucks hoped Reichel could be a stopgap answer for them at second-line centre, it just hasn’t worked out to this point. Reichel has registered just one assist through his 13 games with the Canucks, and has a -5 plus-minus rating over those games. Most recently — even before the Canucks acquired David Kampf — Reichel was moved from 2C to the fourth line wing position. Thursday night against the Dallas Stars, Reichel was a healthy scratch.
The Canucks acquired Reichel from the Chicago Blackhawks last month, sending a 2027 fourth round pick back to Chicago. The club was hopeful that Reichel, who Chicago selected at 17th overall in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, could find a new level to his game with a change of scenery. The book on Reichel was that while he had some interesting offensive tools, his lack of defensive ability would be hard to overcome. Unfortunately for the Canucks, that’s been the story for Reichel in Vancouver so far.
As Dhaliwal mentioned, Nils Höglander is a few weeks away from returning, and Teddy Blueger skated in a non-contact jersey at Thursday’s morning skate. As the Canucks get healthier, Reichel’s spot on the roster — let alone in the lineup — becomes increasingly jeopardized.
