The Vancouver Canucks have placed forward Lukas Reichel on NHL waivers. The club annoucned the move late Saturday morning.
The move comes on the heels of the club’s Friday night blockbuster trade that sent captain Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild. In return, the Canucks received 20-year-old Zeev Buium, 24-year-old Marco Rossi, 21-year-old Liam Ohrgren, and Minnesota’s 2026 first-round pick. With all three players in the deal immediately joining the Canucks’ NHL lineup, the Canucks needed to create room on their roster to fit them all in. And if Rossi is going to play on Sunday, they’ll need to make an additional roster move.
Rossi has been out since mid-November with a lower-body injury, but was slated to be a game-time decision for the Wild’s Sunday game against the Boston Bruins. With the Canucks set to take on the New Jersey Devils on Sunday morning, it will be interesting to see if that’s when Rossi makes his Canucks debut. It seems like a safe bet that both Ohgren and Buium will play on Sunday. And for those wondering, Quinn Hughes will make his Wild debut on Sunday when Minnesota takes on the Boston Bruins in the second leg of back-to-back games. All three players were on the ice for today’s Canucks practice.
When the Canucks eventually activate Rossi from injured reserve, they will need to make an additional roster move. With Reichel bound for Abbotsford (if he clears waivers), it will be interesting to see who on the Canucks’ current roster could be joining him. The Canucks traded for Reichel on October 24th, sending a 4th-round pick to the Chicago Blackhawks in return. Through 14 games with the Canucks, Reichel tallied just one assist and bounced between centre, left wing, and, most recently, the press box as a healthy scratch.
At today’s Canucks practice, both Rossi — wearing jersey number 93 — and Buium — wearing number 24 — were taking reps on the Canucks’ top power play unit, according to Dan Murphy. We will have a full scenes from practice dropping later today (hopefully featuring full line combinations), so stay tuned to CanucksArmy.com!
