After three weeks off, the Vancouver Canucks return to action on Wednesday night against the Winnipeg Jets. And they will get a boost to the lineup with three players returning from injury.
According to Canucks Head Coach Adam Foote, forwards Brock Boeser, Marco Rossi and defenceman Zeev Buium will be in the lineup tonight.
During Tuesday’s practice, Rossi and Boeser skated on a line together, with Drew O’Connor as their other linemate. Buium manned the second-pairing on the left side of Tyler Myers.
Boeser, 29, was injured on January 25 against the Pittsburgh Penguins when Bryan Rust caught him with an elbow to the head in the dying seconds of the third period. Rust was suspended for three games for the incident, while Boeser missed five games.
Once the Canucks returned to practice, Boeser was a full participant. He would later miss a practice session, and then was seen sporting a red non-contact jersey the following practice. Foote shared that he felt under the weather with a viral infection, and the team was just being cautious to ensure it was not a flare-up of his previous concussion.
Rossi, 24, has played just eight games in a Canucks sweater since mid-December’s blockbuster trade. In those games, the Austrian centreman has one goal and two points with a minus-five rating in 18:42 minutes of average ice time.
The former first-round pick was injured in a game against the Philadelphia Flyers on December 30, after blocking a shot. Rossi shared with the media during the Olympic break practice sessions that he may have rushed his initial return to the lineup after the trade.
“It’s not easy for sure,” Rossi said. “After my first shot block, it didn’t feel good, but I kept playing, and then I had to be out for a while. And then obviously, I got traded and there was so much happening. When I came here, I wanted to play right away. Looking back, maybe it wasn’t the best decision, but I feel good now, and I can’t wait to be back.”
Buium, 20, was also injured in that same game against the Penguins. In the first period, Buium was struck in the face with a puck. He left the game, only to return with a bubble cage and finish the contest. Foote later shared that Buium had a facial fracture and would miss the remaining five games before the Olympic break.
Since being acquired with Rossi, Buium has not found the same level of offensive success as he did with the Minnesota Wild. In the 20 games with the Canucks, Buium has two goals and four assists for six points with a minus-eight rating in 20:25 minutes of average ice time. Buium shared that he felt his game was turning around before his injury.
“Those last couple of games, I thought I was growing into myself a little more and thought the game against New Jersey went well,” Buium explained. “I was excited to play again and then this (the injury) happens. But for me, it’s nice to know that when you play your game and do the things you want to do and they start to work and you become more confident knowing that you can do these things at this level. And I think that’s where my head is at. I want to bring that into my game a little bit more. Play with more confidence.”
