Despite a 4-3 loss to the New York Rangers on Tuesday night, it wasn’t all bad for Vancouver Canucks forward Conor Garland, as he and his wife welcomed his first child to the world. They honoured the movie Jaws, as they named their song Quinton, after a character from the movie Jaws.
“Gars had a baby, named Quinton,” the Canucks head coach confirmed after Wednesday’s practice. “But not named after Quinn Hughes, but the guy in Jaws. He’s a Shark lover.”
For those who haven’t seen the movie, here is how Jaws Wiki described the character:
“Sam ‘Quint’ was a grizzled, seasoned shark hunter, who once resided on the Island of Amity, MA in the shanty seaside port of Menemsha. Running a bootleg distillery, and a whale oil business, as well as a weekend charter service, Quint captained the ‘Orca’ and became part of local lore after his last trip out to sea in a bid to capture a giant rogue killer shark. Hired to catch the shark, Quint was joined by the Chief of Amity Police Department, Brody, and visiting ichthyologist, Hooper serving as crew.”
Garland’s love for Sharks was displayed on the hit Sportsnet did with him during the offseason.
“I love sharks,” Garland told Sportsnet. “I grew up on the ocean — I actually don’t swim in the ocean, because I know that they’re closer than people think. I don’t know, I just love sharks.”
Not only does Garland love the Sharks in the ocean, but he also enjoys playing the hockey team, the San Jose Sharks. He’s played the most games against the Sharks (25), scoring the most goals (9) and points (24) than any other team throughout his career. In his most two most recent outings against the Sharks, Garland has two assists in each game.
The Canucks forward will have to wait until December 23rd to face the Sharks again. But this time, with his new son Quinton watching.
