The Vancouver Canucks (1-1) host the St. Louis Blues (1-1) in a Thanksgiving Monday matinee at Rogers Arena. Faceoff is set for 4:30 pm.
It’s a standalone home game before the Canucks embark on a five-game road trip.
What we know
With the earlier-than-usual start time, the Canucks did not hold a morning skate. Early Monday afternoon, head coach Adam Foote confirmed Kevin Lankinen will make his first start of the season in goal to spell off Thatcher Demko, who has been spectacular in each of the first two games. And Victor Mancini will draw into uniform for the first time after being healthy scratches for the team’s first two games. Mancini will replace Derek Forbort on the Canucks defence.
The Canucks return to action after a team day off on Sunday. That followed a 3-1 loss in Edmonton on Saturday night. Brock Boeser scored his second goal of the season early in the third period to get the Canucks within one. But that turned out to be the team’s only goal of the hockey game. The Canucks were outshot 37-15 on the night.
Captain Quinn Hughes picked up the primary assist on the Boeser goal, which moved him past Alex Edler to become the franchise’s all-time scoring leader among defencemen with 410 points.
Special teams have produced mixed results for the Canucks in the early going this season. The penalty kill was five for five on Saturday and is a perfect nine for nine through two games. However, on the flip side, the power play has yet to convert in six opportunities.
The Opponent
The Blues are here following a 4-2 win in Calgary on Saturday afternoon. That was a solid bounce back from a 5-0 loss at home to Minnesota on opening night. Jake Neighbours scored his first two goals of the season against the Flames, including the winner, midway through the third period.
Robert Thomas had a goal and an assist while former Canuck Pius Suter sealed the victory with his first as a Blue two minutes after Neighbours broke the 2-2 tie. Suter has opened the season as the team’s third line centre on a line with Neighbours and PO Joseph’s brother, Mathieu. For tonight’s game, Suter is projected to skate with Alex Texier and Jimmy Snuggerud, according to Daily Faceoff.
As a team, the Blues have scored just four goals so far this season, and Neighbours has a pair of them. Jordan Kyrou, Pavel Buchnevich, Brayden Schenn and Dylan Holloway are all still looking for their first goals of the season.
Joel Hofer made 27 saves in his season debut on Saturday. Head coach Jim Montgomery has not yet disclosed his starter for this afternoon’s contest.
